Anyone else experiencing this, I have been on to nikon and they advised updating the firmware which I did and it did improve things but it let me down again shooting a wedding on Saturday!!

I have 2 and they both do it to some degree. I get the little beep and the warning cuts in.I find not using the difuser helps a bit. There was some talk that the batteries may be maing things worse but im using eneloops and others think they are the best for keeping cool.

Yes overheat protection, mostly happens when bouncing, 3-4 shots and it's shot, pretty useless when it's supposed to be a pro unit, used Metz 45ct4 for years never a bother

That's not the same thing as it overheating then, it's down to the sensor being set to be too sensitive.

I'm pretty sure that you can simply turn off the overheat protection function in the options menu, if you really want to risk it .

Mine's cut out on me twice before now and on neither occassion did it seem to be all that hot. Still, better safe than sorry!

The other way to look at it is, say you were shooting with an SB800 (or a Canon 580 etc) without the overheat protection and there genuinely was a problem with your flash, would you prefer it just kept going until it melted?

As Andy says, if it's causing an inconvenience you can simply turn it off.....

Note to self to give this a go- I've never had it overheat- I assume you just machine gun on full power. I'd hazard a guess that my relaxed (read slow?) style means it's cooled by the time I take another pic and am rarely on 1/1 either. Interesting stuff.

No problem with mine even when on continuous flash at high speed FPS

Realspeed

Apparently using the external battery pack helps, the sensor picks up the heat from the batteries recharging the flash and can cause the over heat protection to kick in.

I have had the 900 since it was launched and was having the same problem with the cut out. was advised by shop via Nikon to turn overheat protection off, did this and not had any problems since.

Some good tips in there, but it still has the feeling of being a 'Nikon/Duracell Propaganda inc.' production :D.

Except that the "Nikon Help Hotline" is one guy, in his bedroom making videos and has nothing whatsoever to do with Nikon

He probably runs an ebay store, selling Duracell batteries ;). According to his report, it's "human error" to install rechargable batteries in an SB900 - that bit made me chuckle .

Still, he's made some valid points about which functions drain the most current from this unit. I just didn't realise that the 'over-heating' problem referred solely to the heat from the batteries . I had always assumed that the problem came from the front element overheating (it can get stupidly hot if you're using rapid succesive flashes :|). Just shows how little I really know :whistling:.

Google the guy (his name is Joseph Nicholas Spina), I'm not saying he's full of ****,but on his YouTube channel he used to claim to have risen to become the Director of Photography for National Geographic and have completed a masters degree - at the age of 20.....

Have just bought one, no time to try yet but on my pentax flash the only time it happened I swapped the batteries and it was fine. Lithiums get really hot
