HI all,

First post in a long time, just getting back into photography, I'm currently using a D90 with a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8, Nikon 18-105 and Nikon 50mm f1.8.

The D90 is getting a little old now, though still a very good camera, I actually downgraded to it from the D7000. I'm just after a bit of advice, would it be worth upgrading to the D7100 or should I just look into a new lens?

Thanks, Adam

Hi Adam,

It depends on what you think either the camera or lens is not doing?

Kev

Not the 7100! What are the short comings of the d90 in you're opinion?

Thanks for the replies, I still like the D90, however, it is showing it's age, it's lasted me 6(ish) years and it's survived a fair few falls and knocks. I'm wondering if the D7100 or D7200 would be worth upgrading to at the moment, or weather to wait until the D90 gives up the ghost...

Fair play to Nikon, the D90 is a very sturdy and capable camera, it's managed to survive my abuse and I brought it second hand!

Sorry, I probably confused things by suggesting a new lens, after a bit of thought I'm pretty happy with my current lens set up.

Adam,

I have the D90 with the same Tamron lens, and when I can afford it I will be upgrading to a full frame camera until then I will keep using the d90.

If you are going to stick with DX and have the money or an itch to upgrade go for the d7200.

I'm in exactly the same position. How much Post-processing do you do? I think you would get more detail PP for example highlights with a 7100 / 7200

I'm not planning to upgrade to full frame, for how often I use my camera, I can't justify the cost.

I've always done minor PP, but just recently, I've started to get more serious about it.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm still trying to come up with a plan to get a D500 past my exchequer/social secretary ;)
To the op. If cost is an issue, have you thought of going back to the D7000? If not, you wont go wrong with the D7100/D7200. It'll give you many years of service. The images, are of course, up to you. There are no poor quality dslr's these days.

I too am looking to upgrade, but from D80. it has been a fine camera for the last 6-7 years. also bought secondhand. much consideration and trailing on this site and I have decided on 7200 too. Going to pick it up tomorrow. and again, it is nice to look at the photos from the full frame, but for my use also, I could never justify the cost again the use I would get out of it. and against my level of photography and the amount of time i could relatively give to it. look forward to hearing what you decide.

Why not just use the money you would spend on a new body for a holiday and take lots of photographs with the kit that you have as you haven't really stated any particular thing that your current kit is letting you down with.

Camera lust is a downward spiral - just don't go there.
Unless of course you have a genuine need for the upgrade. For example you shoot your local football team and find that people are complaining the images you post on the clubs website are no good. Then that could be a valid reason.
Otherwise just go on holiday or treat your partner or kids to something nice.

Of course that's only my opinion having been a previous GAS addict.
