I saw this lens and thought it would be a nice addition to my recently purchased Nikon D40. I have had a look around the internet to find it cheaper anywhere but have so far been unsuccessful. I don't suppose any of you guys know anywhere where it is cheaper?

I suppose I could always go for a used one and save some cash if not. :naughty:

Just to let you know, autofocus won't work with that lens and your camera. And that's roughly the going rate for that lens at the moment. There's been a ton of them for sale on here lately around 60-70 quid.

Sorry for the shameless bump, but I was wondering if anyone could confirm that this is compatible with the D40 as well? Looks like a good deal so I am tempted to buy.

Yes it is compatible with your camera. They change hands at upto 65-70 second hand so you are not going to save anything. They are a fantastic lens even people with thousands of pounds worth of glass will usually have one of these. The important thing to note is the lack of auto focus but as you know that then there is no problem. If you buy it and change your mind you will still get £65 ish selling on here so it is not much of a risk.

Thanks for the reply, i'm very interested in it now.

I don't think I could justify shelling out £100 for a new lens on a £250 camera but £50 used is a very attractive offer indeed.

lol £100 expensive?! Its is the best lens you'll get for that kinda money, Nikon could up the price a bit and it would still be worth it. Keep looking out in the FS forum, they always come up.

Sorry I didnt mean £100 isnt expensive, it is. I mean that for the quality of lens you get, its cheap in comparison.

It depends what you mean by compatible.
Non-AI lenses: Don't bother, you might damage the camera.
AI/AI-S lenses: Mounts, no metering, manual focus (they're all MF lenses anyway.)
AF/AF-D lenses: Mounts, metering, auto-focus won't work.
AF-S/AF-I lenses: Mounts, metering, AF will work.

Edit:
What do you want to use the lens for? 50mm on a crop body such as the D40 is perfect for head and shoulder or half body portraits, animal shots and that sort of thing, but not so good for walkaround. If it's as a general use lens and you can't afford the 50mm f/1.4 AF-S I'd give some serious consideration to the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S. The 35mm focal length on a crop body is a "normal" length and will feel more natural for general purposes.

The link pointed to Argos which was showing a new AF one

It'll fit but will have NO auto ANYTHING. No AF (not too big a deal), no metering (a bigger deal) and no auto diaphragm. Far better to go for one of the AF versions (which will give you metering and auto diaphragm) or even one of the new 50mm lenses with the focus motor in the lens (Nikon's 50mm AF-S G f/1.4 or Sigma's HSM version) - both are expensive but will give AF with the D40(x)/60. Might be cheaper to get a 2nd hand D50 or D70 which will AF with the older (and cheaper) AF-D lenses.

Are you sure you don't get auto-diaphragm?
Setting the aperture on the lens control ring is still auto-diaphragm, as long as the lens remains wide open while you look through the viewfinder and stops down automatically to take the image.

ive got an e series 50mm on my d40, no metering or auto focus but after a while you get an idea of what aperture and shutter speed to use. its never off my camera but just bought a 28mm e series to have something bit wider. between them theyre worth bout 80 quid but ive found them lots of fun and most of the pics on my flickr are using the 50

The best, cheapest Nikon lens you can buy. I'd start a thread to see what people would say. But I imagine it would be this one :D

I would almost never sell mine.

tummelv- where are you based? Maybe there is someone near by with one that you could try out, so you know for sure.

Things are getting a bit confusing in here lol.

The best Nikon lens? Hardly. It's over-hyped because it's cheap. It's not the best value Nikon lens either.

I bought one. I didn't like it. It sat in my camera bag. I sold it.

So it wasn't the best or the best value for you. Doesn't mean it's the same for everyone. I use mine daily, so it's great value as far as I'm concerned.
