Hi everyone,

This is my first post to the forums and I hope that everyone is well.

Although I have had an interest in photography for a couple of years I still consider myself a beginner. I originally spoiled myself with a nikon d80 17-135 kit lens and was amazed at the quality when compared to point and shoot Sony. However I never really went beyond the default settings of portrait etc.

I really fancied the d700 and was fortunate enough to be able to buy one. Silly I know for a beginner but it was a boys toys moment. I now have this camera along with a 50mm 2.8 lens and 24-120 lens. I have been asked by a colleague at work to take some pics of a black tie dinner event that she has organised. Event is taking place in a local hotel. I would hate to let her down with a series of poor pictures but I am worried about the settings I will need to use. Should i use the d80 on auto or go for the d700. This is just a favour for a friend.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for reading

Phil

Welcome to the forum

I would suggest that you go with the D700 as it has much better low light capabilities - you can push the ISO well up and still get very good images. It will allow you to use the 50 at a better effective length as well as it is a FF camera.

Hope this helps

Use the 50.
Use Auto ISO
Use Shutter priorty and set the speed to 1/100 or 1/125 for sharp pics. The ISO speed should go up and down as needed.

d700 with the 24-120mm auto iso up to 8000 and have you got an external flash.

Yes I have an external flash - sb 900. Would those settings still apply?
