Nikon Service - What a Joke!

Start rant.................

D600, back to Nikon again, for a sensor clean. Nikon received on the 22nd, rang last Thursday and asked to speak to a manager, basically to state that I have no confidence in the camera and feel it should be replaced with a D610. Was told no managers available but I would get a call back. Surprise, surprise, no callback and camera still awaiting repair. So another telephone call today, to be told that no decision would be made, until they look at the camera, which hopefully would be by the end of the week!

Away on Saturday without camera, not a happy customer :(

Can see why Nikon are losing market share :mad:

Sorry to hear about your problems. My mate has been having an issue with his d600 as well so will keep an eye on the thread.

Wish Nikon UK would just admit to the problem and treat their customers with a bit of respect. This is the 3rd time I've had to send it back.
What adds to the annoyance, is that I was speaking to a girl from Buncrana camera club and she said that several of their members, had d600 dust / oil issues, but they were exchanged for D610's by Nikon Ireland.
 
Feel for you, Nikon by now should have got on top of this problem (n)

If customer service is judged, by how a company treats it's customers when things go wrong, Nikon have failed miserably.
Just happy, at the minute, that I still held on to my trusty old D90.
 
I know nikon china were doing a no questions asked exchange when I was there last year. Take your d600 in with a reciept and exchange it. They did get torn to shreds by the chinese media over the issue first though. Im sure that as this is the third time back you could claim its unfit for use.
 
Maybe Nikon UK should pay me to go to China for an exchange :D
 
Check with your local Consumer Advice, you might still be able to reject the camera as unfit for purpose.
 
OK so lets deconstruct this.

1) You sent it to Nikon for a SENSOR CLEAN, and it was received 7 days ago.

2) You phoned the service centre 2 days later (Thursday) to ask to speak to a manager (presumably of the service centre) to ask for a REPLACEMENT changing the requirement

3) You get a call today (3 working days later - thats still a callback if not on the same day) saying that they will look at the camera (yes actually check there is an issue) and then make a decision in approximately the next 3 days

And you casting pestilence on Nikon for this ? Wow.

If you want it serviced then a couple of weeks of turnaround on a consumer body for presumably a non-NPS or NPU member is about right. Especially in the summer over school vacation time, and with the Commonwealth Games on, which means there is an onsite team (normally based at the service centre) supporting NPS photographers accredited for the games. You need to understand that you are in a queue and not at the top of it.

Secondly if you wanted a replacement then sending it to the service centre was a bad idea. Service centres service. If it is under warranty then they will fix it, and it it isn't fixable then you'll get a replacement - but a replacement of a (working but dirty) D600 for a D610 from the service centre would be an exception even with the oil issue. If you wanted a refund then you should have taken or sent it back to the retailer you bought it from (assuming you didn't buy it direct from Nikon UK's website) and have them deal with it. Or did you change your mind part way through after sending it when you spoke to the lass and thought you could blag a new model instead ?

If Nikon are losing market share then it is because of the smartphone market decimating low end compact camera sales and M4/3 from Fuji, Olympus and Panasonic eating all DSLR sales not just Nikons. Not because you can't wait 2 weeks to get your sensor cleaned. If you had needed it doing quickly then plenty of shops that will do it same day/while-u-wait.

BTW - you'll get the same service or worse at Borehamwood with Canon - especially if you take it upon yourself to have a rant at them down the phone..

Yes, on the advice of a Nikon representative. (Work buys quite a bit of Nikon gear).
No, didn't get a phone call today, I had to contact them. If I ring a company and they tell me someone will call me back, then foolish me, I expect them too! :rolleyes:
Yes. D600 sensor dust / oil problem is a very real issue for a lot of D600 users.
Never expected to be at the top of the queue, but when I ring to make an enquiry, I expect good customer service. Not to be "palmed off" with a promise of a return call.
Perhaps you need to read Nikon's most recent advisory.

Now hold on there, don't go trashing a camera maker, that's just not fair. Thankfully, you weren't listening to my telephone conversation, which was very polite as I never vent my anger on the poor soul at the other end of the telephone line.

there is the easy option.... the tried and tested method of disgrunted with customer service :)
 
The D610 does this too. I've a D800 and it just doesn't get dirt in to the same extent.

Just learn to DIY clean and forget about it.

I've cleaned a few sensors in my time, so no fear of doing it, but just feel that Nikon has handled the whole affair badly. Real shame, as the D600 I believe, is an excellent camera.
 
Lynton likes to email the CEO (which works to an extent depending on the company)

on point all DSLR sensors get dirty - any company who says they don't is lying - but its not really a fault

on the other hand there is a known issue with some D600s spraying oil on to the sensor - which is a fault, but one that is supposed to be fixable.

I had the shutter replaced, but problem still persists, which concerns me.
At the end of the day, if I have to clean the sensor regularly, so be it. Obviously would prefer, if Nikon did what it is doing in other territories, i.e. replace after a few sensor cleans.
 
Yeah, cleaning it. It apparently settles down. The shutter from the D610 doesn't do this, apparently, but mine did. Quick clean, all sorted.

Has it just done it the once Steve, or more often than that? I would imagine it has a fair few clicks on the clock by now?
 
Cameras all get dirty, ok the D6x0 series more than most, but its like 2mins to fix. Who cares?

But they don't all spray oil, which is really what |I was asking.
 
My D610 did. I cleaned it, as the shutter count increases, the problem goes away. Just clean the thing.

But this is the problem, it seems some (not all), continue to have the problem regardless of shutter increase.
 
D600 now dispatched. Yet another shutter plate replacement.

Of course, I only know this because they emailled me an invoice, not actually telephoned me like I requested and they promised :rolleyes:
