My new flash has just arrived curtesy of Nikon free offer (D200 to D300s upgrade offer).

Its so big.

Doesnt look like the type of thing you can use on a night out clubbing.

I was just starting to get the hang of iso settings v f stops v exposure times after stepping up from the D90 to the D300s

Now I have to work on using the flash.

Its like being at school again

It's a brilliant bit of kit and no - it's not the sort of thing for a night out 'clubbing' unless you're being paid to photograph other people on a night out 'clubbing'...lol

Stick it on iTTL and let the camera figure it all out - it's what I do for the majority of flash stuff...even off-camera work...I've yet to find a situation it (and the other three SB900's that I have) can't handle...

I started to read the instructions.

I will stick it on iTTL like you recommended

Same boat for me, any hints and tips gratefully accepted! :D

I disagree...they're great for clubbing drunk punters with... your monopod will leave a bit more damage though ;)

:D Yes, it is a pretty daunting bit of kit - I wondered what I'd done, buying one, after I started reading the user manual :(.

Top Tip for you: Invest £17.19 (Link ...) in Joe McNally's "Hot Shoe Diaries" and see what this baby can really do . A lot of stuff in the book is done with just a single SB900 and he talks you through the settings that he used etc.

The only problem I've found with reading this book is that now I want another SB900 (or two ;)).

Shooting round corners :D

iTTL on the CLS is good, but manual triggered remotely is often then only way to go for me as venues keep putting walls in silly places

The beauty of McNally's book is that it keeps saying the same thing over & over again, so if you didn't 'get' it the 1st even 10th time you will in the end; though a lot of his corrections for iTTL would have been simpler using manual IMO as the output isn't afefected by subject movement

And yes, they are big buggers aren't they :)
