Which of these do I want, to use with my D200?

I've been pondering this for a few weeks now, but still haven't decided  My experience of flashes is virtually nil, but I am gradually learning what all the specs refer to. I understand that I can use either of the flashes remotely with my camera, so I guess that isnt a factor, unless I ever want to control mroe than two groups (unlikely). The only things so far that stand out to me are the higher guide number with the SB800, and the fact that the head tilts down, which would be good if I ever get a macro lens (which I intend to one day ;)). The SB800 also includes some coloured diffusers. Is it worth the extra money though?

So is there anything else that I have missed or that i should know about these flashes?
Thanks for your help :)

I use the sb600 with my D200. As far as I can tell the only benefit of the sb800 is the higher output.
The sb800 will act as a commander for remote flash while the sb600 won't. However as you have the D200, this is not an issue as you can use the onboard flash as the commander to control different groups of remote flash.
So, if you need the higher output go for the sb800, if not the sb600 is fine.

Gareth.

Yeah sb600 will be fine, as said above the 800 has a higher output and the commander function, which is for the likes of the D50 which doesn't have this function on the camera.

 Just what I was thinking :) Wasn't sure if there was anything I was missing, spec-wise

I like a couple of SB800 flash guns, the stuff Dave Black does with his flashguns are FAB !

it just so happens i got my sb 800 today , 1 other extra feature it has compared to a sb 600 is the repeating flash facility.

id say get the 600, then when you understand it you can upgrade to the 800 as you'll want two wireless flashes anyway

I still don't understand mine after 4 months! :p:lol: From what i have learnt though, the SB600 is brilliant and a huge leap from the onboard flash. As Joe T said if you have to ask the question, the SB600 is the one for you. The SB800 is for people who know they need the extra specialised features (which most people don't).

ooooh good post, was meaning to ask this myself :D

Also whats the deal with using the flash off camera, some sort of flexi cord you can get? :s

lol, I know when I got mine I so so purplexed by its complexity but in actual fact it's just got really badly laid out buttons. What I really like is the fact that you can be so creative and see the difference in your results straight away... I can now visualize what I want and then pretty much get something that looks similar.

I do like the idea of the SB800's extra range and lighting power though - plus having such a good commander flash gets me going, although I'd probably still use my D80 to trigger both flashes wirelessly.

No need for a cord if you have a flash commander mode on your cam! check out the link given by daftbugga - very helpful :)

So am I correct in thinking my D70s could wirelessly trigger an SB-600 ?

Dont worry, found me google button ;-)

answer is yes then

Cheers guys  My SB600 has been working well for a couple-of-months-or-so now

Similar type question but I have a Nikon D50.

The D50 hasn't got the commander function so it cannot control the flashes remotely off camera, it needs the SB800 on it to do that. However the SB600 is a more than capable flash (got one myself for the D50) and if you need the wireless feature then add a SB800 and away you go :).

Indeed, they are such an improvement for any shot that it's a bit like a power up for your entire lens collection, and another flash would be great... I really want another too :)
