Sorry - trying to juggle planning a photo shoot for a cement firm....
Basically, HSS ONLY works if you obey Nikon protocols. That's either by putting the flash on top of the camera or using a Nikon cable or CLS. There's some complicated interaction between camera and flashgun - the SB910 actually pulses on and off at 50 Hz and this is synchronised with the shutter.
Some very clever radio triggers basically encode the CLS signal and achieve HSS. AFAIK the only ones that can do this are the new pocket wizards (maybe - they can do other stuff that should be harder) and Photix Odins. But the trigger market is quite saturated - there are new ones every day.

No worries and cheers for the detailed response, I was hoping there was some manual override on the flash but not to worry.
I'm wondering if I need to keep the aperture wide for creative reasons and a shutter speed faster than 1/250s to expose for the ambient correctly on a bright day then I don't think I'll be able to use off camera flash as fill, so I guess it's down to a reflector or keep the flash on the camera?

There are very few radio triggers that will allow you to use HSS, the two already mentioned and Radio Popper ... I've tried RP, but have since moved to PW simply because the PW are less flimsy. Otherwise both work equally good.
