Nikon SB-900 loud noise

I have just received an SB-900, it makes a real racket when switcing the button to on and also when zooming in and out. It's sounds like an electronic bleeping noise, a bit like an inkjet printer sound. I have tried two sets of fully charged batteries, tried it on and off camera and it still does it. I had a reply off Kaouthia on another thread and he said he could harldy hear his. Just wondered what other people experiences are of it :eek:
 
The problem is your perception of noise is subjective. I've got two SB900's and they're both definitely audible, though I wouldn't say it was 'a real racket'.
 
You've got one of the bad batch they had. If you dare leave it on for 10 minutes, it'll burst into flames.

Thanks for the replies. I teach at a college and one of my students works at Jessops so I might go in and let him do a demo of one. I'll hold back on the £10 offer for now :clap:

Seriously, they do make a noise when the zoom head moves. When you 1st switch it on, it may change zoom setting and will make a noise.

Have you had a flash with built in zoom head before? My 900 makes a lot more noise than the 600...

Thanks Outlaw. No I haven't had a flash like this this before so it's hard for me to know what's normal and what isn't but it sounds like mine is making the right kind of noises so that's something.
 
Just updating this thread, I took the flash to my man in Jessops and they said it was perfectly normal so thanks to everyone who replied.
 
I picked up a SB800 this week (wuhoo two flashes!) and have to say the SB900 is waaaay noisier, hadn't noticed before. But yes, a very loud photocopier type noise it makes, but mine always has and the same with the others I have seen.
 
I have the same issue and thought it was a problem. Inkjet bubble printer sounds about the right description. I'm sure it's ok outdoors but I wouldn't be keen using it somewhere quiet.
 
Well, unless you are spying its not really a problem is it?

The main noise is the initialisation, which it checks its ok and seeks from one end to the other, after that it only makes a noise as it zooms the head. Once you press the buttom you've got shutter noise, bright light and capacitor recharge whine anyway... not exactly stealthy :D
