Would this be ideal for an event? In like a dark enviroment but flashing lights, as a band event?

Its a nice little flash, but for quality event photos you need to bounce flash, and the SB-400 doesn't really have the grunt for that.

The SB400 is only really a slight step up from the onboard flash, if you want a Nikon flash the starting point is really the SB-600 at around £200, otherwise you're better off looking at some of the thrid party units, such as the YongNuo ones.

conversely i like the sb400 a lot and when i had to photograph a musician for a guitar article recentley its the only flash i took [i am not to keen on flash anyway]
i took him around the back of the stage in a booth and bounced it of the ceiling and also tried some straight on with a diffuser.
its small light and uncomplicated and so i tend to carry it out of the house over my heavyier sb600 anyway.
the sb600 of course is more versatile.
