I'm just lost for words, as I am still in shock at these prices.

I feel as if I've been put into a tumbler-dryer and someone is putting me on high-rinse/spin

I guess it will be back to Excel, and drawing out a spreadsheet of cost / exchange rates and doing some financial speculation & modelling, to see where's the best place for me to buy!

Though this is only a hobby for me, I feel for all those earning a living out of this .. and how badly this will hurt them; not just the stores and resellers, but the photographers too!

It dosent really suit Canon to be that much cheaper than Nikon and vice versa.
Your comment is somewhat blinkered in the fact that Sony's A700 continues to fall and so do Pentax models.
The DSLR world does not just revolve around Nikon and Canon.
So if you take that into account then how can Canon and Nikon actually justify the price increases?

Not sure why you think I think it's just a Nikon / Canon market, I mentioned at least 5 companies in my original post!

My point is, it's not just Nikon that are raising RRPs, Canon have been at it (in a quieter way) for a little while, their second rise this year was back on Feb 1st...such as nearly £2k added to the RRP of the 1Ds Mk3 as well as increases on every single body. Sigma have increased the prices of all their lens by an average of 40% (the headline grabber being £8k added onto their 200-500 2.8)

It's not for me to suggest why the increases have occurred, but most if not all of the companies have said its due to currency fluctuations. If some items have decreased I'm not here to speculate why certain companies have managed it, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are making a profit on such items.

I guess it just emphasises my point though, everyone is at it (even Pentax and Sony, both also citing 'currency fluctuations' as the reason), but most choose not to 'publicise' it. Nikon appear to get the grief, yet sooner rather than later the increases from all the other companies will filter through to retail - many have already.

I'm so pleased I've bought all the gear I need now! Even managed to sneak in a 70-200 VR for a cracking price.

I know people love the feel of a new lens but I'm always trying to keep up with used bits and pieces. Just got to look out for peeps inflating their prices post price rise!;)

That is unbelievable..like many others bang goes new body and lens I had planned on getting...

JAA781DA 70-200MM F2.8G AF-S VR IFED NIKKOR 1899.99
This lens went on my wish list last year at about £1,100 for a new one. I doubt I'll have much luck with picking up a second hand one for that price now. Even with the price increase, I'm still not tempted to go for the Sigma or Tamron versions. I want the Nikon so I'm holding out until I get one I can afford.

On the plus side though, I did manage to bag a brand new D300 for £740 in December which is half the new retail price so I've won on that one.

Hasn't the price of that nearly doubled? Sure it was about £280 odd late last year?

Bought mine, right after I sold my 70-200VR (late Aug. '08). Paid just under £300 for it. I couldn't find anywhere to get it any cheaper, except from OneStop Digital.

I borrowed one from a mate a week or so back so he could try a couple of my lenses. He offered me it for £180 but I didn't need another lens so didn't bother!

Maybe I should take him up on it!

That's dirt cheap, and I am surprised you didn't go for it!

This might just be the chance that Sony have been waiting for to Buy out Nikon.
Nikon at 33% of its value that it was less than a year ago.
Sony has taken a big hit also but its no secret they have been coveting Nikon for a few years now and with Nikon looking like they could be on their last legs it might prove an interesting aquisition or merger.

On their last legs? Are you serious? Have you seen the losses that Sony have posted for the last 1/4? Do you honestly think anyone could raise the cash needed to buy out Nikon (who are far from just camera makers).

Mifsuds have a 70-200 VR for £1199.....

'Twas tempted, but tbh I need to be scaling back not buying more stuff I don't need

Did take a couple of nice pics with it on my D40 though, shot a birdy wide open 300mm and it looked a sharp one!

300mm f/4 murders it though ;)

Agree with this..Sony have already said they are going to have to concentrate on core activities and anyway as you say absolutely no bank is funding takeovers.
Expanding by taking over Nikon would be insanity.

I spent last weekend in the part with my 70-300VR and a tripod. Got some really fantastic shots, even at 300mm. I couldn't do this earlier, as I never used it with a tripod. It's a beauty of a lens, especially for the price.

Well, if you are stacking up lenses that you don't want / need, I know of a couple you have that I am very interested in ;) :P ....

Time to kill off those dreams of a D400, at these prices it'll be over £1500

Thank goodness I wasn't planning on buying any gear this year!

+1

Thank God I bought my entire Nikon photographic kit in Dec 2008/Jan 2009, in spite of all of the good advice to hold back and build it all up gradually ;).

I know :(, nobody likes a smart-arse ... :coat:

very dissapointing news in this thread :(

all I want now is a 14-24 f2.8 nikon and it cost the earth now.
Not this year me thinks

Looks like I am giving up photography as a hobby and moving onto something less expensive like importing diamonds or rebuilding a Vulcan bomber
