Jeez, that has put paid to any new lenses this year, particularly the 24-70mm and the 300mm f/2.8.

:shake:

somethings got to give if we cant afford them and dont buy them surely
they will have to lower the prices again or have loads of stock pileing up?

I certainly am not going to be buying any at those prices, however as you say something has to give.

I can see a fair few retailers struggling to shift stuff at those rates, however not many sell at RRP.

200 - 400 RRP = £5899, Clifton Cameras was £4250 Monday £4850 today, which will be the current retail from an authorised dealer.

The knock-on effect is that retailers will see reduced turnover, and thus reduced profit margin...

This one 70-200MM F2.8G AF-S VR IFED NIKKOR 1899.99

is bonkers considering the NEW US Price is the same in $ so even with the crap exchange rate it will still be around £500 cheaper to get one from the US!

Out of curiosity, is anyone following price increases in other parts of the world? Are they in any way by a similar magnitude, factoring the exchange rate issue?

Yes - we are definately getting the **** end of the stick.

Remember - when the £ was £1 to $2 and was £1 was 235 yen (I was living in Tokyo then), we were still more expensive than the US and Japan.

Nothing has changed.

Remember D300 launch price? - £1299 here, $1899 there...

I figure the UK has always been more expensive than the US. This has been my experience for the past few decades ... however, I was wondering, for examply ..

70-200VR was £1,050 back in Jan. 2008, it's now £1,900 (an increase of 81%)
24-70 AF-S was £1,1,50 in December 2007, it's now £1,500 (an increase of 30%)

Part of that increase is exchange rate, and the rest is just pure price hike due to whatever factors Nikon UK see fit.

So, while the prices in the US are cheaper, accounting for the $ vs. Yen fluctuations overa given period, how much better off, or worse off, are our friends in the US?

Taking this further, how much has the price change in Japan?

I ask this as I am very interested in knowing if it is feasable and logical to buy from abroad! I am flying back to Saudi end of the month, so I will check what prices I can get on stocks available there (but that's a very small market, and will have very limited exotic lenses) ... and weighout the option of buying from US or Japan (I have a number of friends in the airline business who could bring it over for me .. to Saudi, where there is no import duties, tax or VAT).

Buying abroad does seem the logical answer...

Meant to say you'll still need ot pay them with the weakening £ though...

The trick to buying from the USA is when there is a rebate on.

For example, the D700 was selling with a $300 instant rebate for several months in the USA.

Rebate time also deflates 2nd hand prices in the USA, for example I paid £635 for my 1st 70-200 VR etc during USA rebate time - a lens that is now £1900 over here..

Oh, but most of my income is in Saudi currency, which is pegged to the US$. This way, I can weigh the option of buying locally or from abroad.

However, the biggest concern I have is if these prices are also happening in Japan and US, and if they are going to stick ... i.e. they are not a repercussion of the exchange rate! If so, then it doesn't make so much of a difference .. it will just mean that things are getting ridiculously expensive; or, we've had things very cheap in the past.

Don't I wish I had bought a couple of these :shake:

Even the prices here, of £1,050 sounds like a good bargain, now lost!

Or Nikon will sell them in other countries...ones where the currency is still worth something.

2006 the 70-200 VR was $1399 in the USA on Rebate, and selling here £1149 over here from memory. The pound was strong then too, not quite 2 to 1 but about £1: $1.80 if memory serves...

So I don't think we've ever really been very cheap....

The price of the lens is really insane.. its nice but not nearly £2k nice :)

Interesting that Nikon get the rough end of the stick, I asked a photography magazine staffer recently and they said that Nikon UK are the only ones that actually issue press releases when they bump the RRPs up. All the reports in the press are that Nikon are raising prices, when in fact ALL camera manufacturers are raising prices (I guiess the press doesn't think to look/research the others). You've got to wonder if being 'transparent' will be doing Nikon UK more harm than good.

Canon have already brought in a couple of increases with some insane price rises (well documented on this forum), Sigma are the same and no doubt Sony, Tamron, Tokina etc have (or will be) increased prices.

This might just be the chance that Sony have been waiting for to Buy out Nikon.
Nikon at 33% of its value that it was less than a year ago.
Sony has taken a big hit also but its no secret they have been coveting Nikon for a few years now and with Nikon looking like they could be on their last legs it might prove an interesting aquisition or merger.

It dosent really suit Canon to be that much cheaper than Nikon and vice versa.
Your comment is somewhat blinkered in the fact that Sony's A700 continues to fall and so do Pentax models.
The DSLR world does not just revolve around Nikon and Canon.
So if you take that into account then how can Canon and Nikon actually justify the price increases?

Some increase is inevitable. However when you are looking at a 80% hike on the 70-200VR then things don't add up IMHO.

Especially when VAT has fallen and fuel (transportation) costs have been falling here in the UK.

I suppose the 70-200 will still be below RRP, RRP doesn't equal street price...

Looks like the end of my D700 plans in the summer :'( i really can't see shop's like jessops and W.H.E riding this storm, the price hikes are just outrageous, and a lot of people myself included cannot justify upgrading kit at these prices, something somewhere has got to give :(

You could just wait any buy the Nikony AD700 in the summer.:lol:

Or they might call it the Sonkon AD700.
Either way they both sound crap.

So what does Nikon actually achieve in doing this? They've just shot themselves in the foot imo. :cuckoo:

aye that's the one, with the in lens and in body image shake vibration stabilisation reduction that will negate the need for fast glass, because obviously it'll be that powerful it'll stop things around it moving rather than compensating for hand shake :)

Can't believe some of those prices....

85mm f/1.4 up to £1100

As for the 18-70mm going to close to £400 - what is that all about?!

My masterplan of a D700 and some nice primes is out of the window (for now). :(

Now where do I get hold of the winning lottery numbers for next week?
