Nikon repair

Folks,

I have a very lightly used Nikon 70-200 VR II which i put into Johnstons in Glasgow ( Nikon authorised)for a repair. The lens wouldnt focus unless i turned the focus ring several times from one way to the other way. It would then focus itself after a minute or two.

It was repaired and cost over £300. I tried it 2 weeks later but it still had the issue. Again it went back and they gave it a service and check and saw nothing wrong. That day i tried it and it was fine. 3 weeks later i tried again and it was back to the same as before.

I tried on several bodies but still wouldnt work without me turning it quickly myself many times first.. With covid i never got round to taking it back and to be honest i would rather try somewhere else( now out of their 6 month warranty)

They told me it was because it wasn t being used enough which i doubt- i have many lenses not used for a few years and they are fine.

Should i try Nikon or somewhere else. I dont want to keep paying for a repair for it to go unfixed.

Anyone else had this issue?

Thanks for the reply. Might send it off one more time to try. The last place said there was nothing wrong with the focus motor. Just annoying that its been in twice and its still the same.

Just an update- Fixation got my lens and said it required a new SWM, there was an electrical fault, they cleaned, calibrated and replace 2 rubber rings on the body of the lens. Just got it delivered and its spot on again, all working fine.

I will never use AJ Johnson in Glasgow again as they diagnosed and repaired the wrong things in the lens( twice) then was told i need to use it more—- the lens wasnt working a few days after getting it back from them. They charged over £300 and gave me back a manual focus only lens. I will of course be mailing them to let them know their mistake.

Normally they are pretty good, saddened to hear they got it wrong.

Indeed, mine goes months without being used and it's fine.

Just started using my Nikon 50mm again after perhaps twelve years sitting in a cloth bag on a shelf -- it works fine. Not using it enough indeed, huh, what rubbish.

Yeah it was just an excuse during lockdown. It wasn't working days after their repair. It would work if you worked the focus rings many times and then would be ok for a few mins. My first experience with them wasnt a good one but all good after the Fixation repair. Cheers.

That's a sad outcome for a local repair agent. I had a replacement focus motor fitted by Fixation on my Nikon 300mm IF ED f/4 and have to say the process was smooth and professional. I fell in love with my 300mm because of it's sharpness and rendering, and was worried my copy might come back less perfect, but I was not disappointed with the lens retaining the sharpness and character after the repair. I was impressed with Fixation's service

Thats good to hear, i will get to use the lens out on Sat morning but looks fine so far. Also my copy was nice and sharp, i could have bought another lens for the money spent but i know this ones history and know its been looked after.

I used AJ Johnstone many years to replace the top plate control panel screen of my D300 and it took over 3 months which I thought was a bit too long.

Part of it is Nikon's parts timescales. I had a tilt shift lens in there for repair in 2017, took most of the summer, not because of them, but them getting the part from Nikon.

The repair was fine, but I dread to think what Nikon's timescales are now for parts.
