HI all,

Im after a remote for my D5500 so i can use the camera when abroad. I dont want to have to explain to locals how to use the camera each time i need a group photo.
I would like to have a non wired one, infra-red would be fine.

What do people recommend, and do i jest need the remote unit itself, or have i got to buy something that docks into the camera too? A 'receiver' if you will.

Lastly, can you use the remote to shoot video? - it would be quite helpful for me as i can set the camera on the tripod, sit back and then start recording should any action happen.
Unless there is a function to start recording when it hears sound, but i dount it!

Regards,
Nick

It'll almost certainly tell you which remote(s) work with your camera in the manual - available online if it didn't come with it. It'll also tell you which functions it can start, such as video.

Thanks, i will check the relevant pages on the manual.

After a bit of googling, im still not sure it will work with video. It will be handy to have it for the shots, if it works for video then its a bonus.
I know the D5500 has wireless etc, so i can use my smartphone as a remote, but its a bit of a faff and id rather just have the small Nikon clicker!

The D5500 supports a simple IR remote. The ML-L3 (as Michael said above) is the official one, but Amazon sell a identical looking compatible one in their basics range for £8 or other "no name" versions are even less.

It doesn't however support video.

Can you do anything with WiFi to control it?

the below is copy and pasted from a thread on another forum and I'm guessing the D5500 is the same...

I've just had an update from Nikon on this which might help.

"Altho not stated on page 203 of the D5300 user manual the remote shutter release to begin a movie or Video shot can only be implemented with the WR-R10 and WR-T10 combination. These accessories must be purchased separately.

The Wireless Remote Controller - transceiver WR-R10 has a recommended retail price of £99.99 and is available from the Nikon online store from the link below.

Hi Eloise,

Thanks for providing that information, it seems the Transceiver and Transmitter combination will provide access to video recording as well as AF. Buying both isn't cheap, but its something you only have to buy once and hopefully it will remain compatible for years to come.

Thanks,

Might be worth looking at the non branded ones, I use one with my D5500. I think I paid about £4 on Amazon and it works flawlessly. Just a thought?

@Emma10 does it work with video though? If you set your camera into Video mode and press the shutter button on the remote, does it start recording?

Nikon ML-L3 worked perfectly with my D5300, basic, wireless & cheap!

if you only want the remote for family photos then this would be my answer too, cheap as chips on ebay. Not the most versatile if you want something that will lock the camera into bulb mode for long exposures etc though but perfectly fine for what you say you need it for :)

I'm not sure, if I'm being honest I never use my camera for video. I will give it a try when I'm home.

@keeweeman I need the video option too. Hence the numerous questions by myself, and the suggestions from Eloise.
If it were as simple as having the ML-L3, i would buy it tonight! :)

Just given it a try and it doesn't work with video, I maybe wrong but you have to flick the live view button before you can press the video button, so it might not be possible with most remotes? Also would you still need to be near the camera for focusing anyway? ( I don't shoot video so forgive me if I'm wrong)

@Emma10 Thanks for checking. This is why Eloise suggested the WR-R10 and WR-T10. I believe they work with AF anyway, but if they didnt it wouldnt be too much of a drama as you can just focus in manual before starting the video. Provided your subject is stationary.

Yeah it's a continuous learning curve, a fun one of course

The problem with the ML-L3 is you have to point it at the IR receiver on the camera, so I don't think it's a solution if you're wanting to stand in the group while firing a remote. I've used a Hahnel Giga T Pro II which worked well for this

@Scirocco_09 I agree with the issue you had there, you will end up with alot of shots of you pointing at the camera. However, i dont believe the Hahnel has video compatibility. I think i would rather pay the extra for the Nikon WR-R10 and WR-T10 combination. It will hopefully remain future proof if i choose to upgrade.

2 ways round this - the ML-L3 is very small so can be held inconspicuously and pressed so it isn't visible in the photo, or (if it's anything like my old D70) the camera can be set to a 2 or 10 second delay after firing it with the remote.

On the video side, it might be easier to start the camera recording, get in shot for the action then edit out the slight pauses later using the software of choice.

I think the Hahnel should work so long as you can set (in the custom config menus) your shutter release to start and stop video.
