Hi All

I've had dx format bodies since 2010, when I first got into photography.

I've owned the d40,d60, d3100,d3200,d5100 & d7000.

Tonight, I bit my tongue and made the jump to a d810. Risky move, as I've never had an fx format body.

Now that I have the body on order, I need to talk lenses...

currently, I enjoy car rig photography, some landscape/cityscapes when on holiday and the occasional wedding for friends/family.

The only fx lens I currently own is the sigma 70-200 f2.8 os version. a 2x tele converter is also in my kit bag.

I need some ideas on what lenses to buy, and Ideally i need to know f the ones I like are any good?

I'm currently looking at just a 50mm f1.4 nikon and the 20mm f1.8 nikon lenses. Has anyone had these?

I'm getting rid of the last bits of my dx kit, then I can build my fx kit up.

Had both of those. Can't praise the 20mm enough and I assume it's wide enough for rig stuff but you probably know best on that. 50mm is nice enough if you like that focal length. I got bit bored of it. The other thing is that the 1.8g version is at least as good and half the price.

What focal lengths do you currently like on dx?

I've got the D750 and as a walk about lens I find I use the 24-120 F4 which is a fantastic lens

Just remember that you will lose the 'extra reach' of DX so your 50 that was 75 equivalent will now be 50 ... that may affect things like weddings etc.
As above the 24-120 works well with the D810 and an 85 f1.8 or f1.4 will give you back the range of your 50 on DX :)

I don't know what focal length you will need for rig stuff? As above don't forget that the focal length stated will be the focal range you get, unlike your DX bodies where the effective focal length is 1.5x the stated length.

If you want the best short zoom then get the 24-70mm f2.8. However the 24-120mm f4 is just as sharp, has more flexibility but you lose a stop of light. Don't forget effective DOF will be shallower on FX so f4 on the D810 will be like f2.8 on your DX in terms of DOF.

The 50mm f1.8g is a bargain at a touch over £100 and is very sharp. Worth considering if you don't need the f1.4.

The 85mm f1.8g is another cracking lens.

That's awesome, thank you for the replies. I currently have a lot of f2.8 lenses on dx. Most people for rigs are using f10-16

I'll definitely be getting the 50mm, and I'm interested to try the 24-120..

Hi Little_duke,

First of all, congrats on your D810 purchase and welcome to the financial pain of FX lenses! :) I nearly swooped in and bought the camera body that you did but it felt wrong to do so while you were deciding. A nice deal you got there.

Like you, I started with various DX camera bodies and I don't regret my decision to re-mortgage! :)

Anyway, before you purchase the Nikon 50mm f/1.4. If you can, please check out the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art. I had both for a while and while I really like the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 (small and light and a lovely bokeh), in my opinion (others may disagree and that is fine of course) that lens doesn't come alive over the full image until about f/2.8 and this is where the Sigma really shines as it is great from f/1.4! Additionally, I also found that the the colour rendition of the lens was more, er, pleasing (sorry not sure how to articulate this properly) but I found that for me I was needing to do less post processing which saved a lot of time to get an image that I liked.

If your car rigs are anything like when I stick a camera (go pro) on my Ducati then you need quite a wide angle, and for that I like my 16-35 f/4, not for when its cracking on though! Make sure you get a good copy and I was lucky with mine that it was (bought from here from a great seller) but I know others on here have had a little bit of trouble.

If you buy the 24-120 please share your review as I'm close to buying it as a walk about lens.

Have fun mate

Thank you for this :)

I've had the standard 50mm f1.4 sigma and loved that lens for dx. I've been watching loads of youtube videos and everyone has suggested the 16-35 over the fixed 20mm f1.8. I'd be tempted by the art 50mm too as i need a good prime lens. Ideally, the 16-35 needs to be bought pretty quick, as im off to crete in a couple of weeks, so in need of a wide lens for that trip. I've only got 4 weddings left this year (all friends/family) whoch I'm taking pics at, so again this lens will work well.

thanks for your input
