Nikon do Brasil Ltda. announces the closure of e-commerce in Brazil
Nikon Corporation is optimizing R & D, Sales and Manufacturing structures in a global scale restructuring.

As part of this process Nikon do Brasil Ltda.—as of December 31st, 2017—will end the sale of cameras, lenses and photographic accessories in the Brazilian market,

It seems the scope of its necessary economies are far greater than might have been supposed.
It seems strange to me that a country the size of Brazil can not support even an on line business.
Totally giving up on such a market is extraordinary.

They're not "totally giving up on a market".

They're ceasing their e-commerce, which I assume, sells direct to customers. People will still be able to buy the items from other retailers.

NOT so, they closed all their retail sales some time ago.

However they are continuing to honour grantee and service work till they expire.

The only way to buy a new Nikon in Brazil will be through a grey importer.

It'll be a shame if they are. Maybe they just need yet another reorganisation... but this time an effective one.

Unless that reorganisation also happens to replace the people running the company I'm guessing it won't change much.

That was my point. Any change has to make a difference. What the company is doing now isn't working well enough so things need to change and if the people are the problem they need to go and be replaced with others.
 
Nikon is mile from being in it's death throws. but is certainly concentrating its resources.
I do not think camera makers have helped them selves in making modern cameras so complicated and so different in how you set them up, the menus, controls and subsystems can be mind blowing, when you pick up a strange camera.
I have been using cameras of all types for over 70 years, and have to study the hand book of each new camera for several hours.
In the 50's there was not a camera that I could not just pick up and use.

Today every camera maker invents the wheel anew. Unfortunately some choose square wheels it seems.
 
I'm not sure that being complicated is the problem, the younger generations seem to be able to understand the complexities of smartphones and other gadgets that they're interested in easily enough.
 
Import tariffs in Brazil are insane, a D750 + 24-120 costs about 12,000 reais (2800 GBP) so it’s no wonder Nikon are shutting down sales there, they’re probably being severely undercut by grey imports and the economy in Brazil isn’t so good at the moment. Sony didn’t even bother with the PS4 when it launched.
