I have just purchased a Nikon D300s. Photoshop CS3 will not recognise the Raw files :( An upgrade to CS4 costs £177:(:(, and considering CS3 does everything I want other than process the raw files, I am loathe to stump up for the upgrade.

So anyway, my question is what would you do? I am a Mac user and I see these options as possibles - would appreciate any others you are aware of (or comments on the options I have identified):

1. Nikon Capture NX2 - £120 or so
2. Raw Photo processor - Free
3. Adobe DNG converter - Free

Cheers !

Have you tried installing version 5.5 of Camera Raw. It says on the Adobe website that it's not backwards compatible with anything older than CS4 but I've read that about previous versions and they have worked fine and supported cameras with my CS3.

When trying to open a NEF file I get a message saying the plugin (ACR 5.5) is not compatible with this version of Photoshop :(

Thanks for the suggestion.

I use NX2 and Apples iphoto for my D300 and D700

you can convert to DNG format then load into CS3 i think

BigBigBlue, I'll have a look around and see if I still have a copy of Capture NX1. If I do then you can have it FOC. Leave it with me for a few days....

Don't know if you can upgrade it to version 2 for free online or anything but if you can, you can have it.

Otherwise, get a copy of Lightroom - works with just about anything I'm led to believe and probably the best software around

Specialman,
That is a very generous offer, thank you:thumbs:. The upgrade is not free, but it IS quite a bit cheaper than the full version.

PM me if you find it so we can arrange for me to pay for the postage.

Cheers

Ok I'm very new to pp, so please forgive my ignorance, I shoot on D300s, (back up is a D70) and have Leopard OSX on a mac (have Tiger on another). I also have Nik transfer/view.
As the previous poster says, I see I can convert to TIFF and then elements 8 will accept the files.
My (possibly) idiot questions;
If I convert all my files to Tiff in "View", what happens to the NEF file, and have I made any non reversible changes, or in fact any changes to the image itself?
How do I import multiple files to elements?
Do I trash the NEF files, to save space?
Do I buy NX2 when it supports mac/300s (update Jan I believe) as it should segue seamlessly with my current set up, or go for LR as that would work better with PS?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
