I would of thought that kit would be more suited to macro work. Have a look at a ring flash, compatible with the SB800.
 
You are correct. From what I've read, it is mainly used for macro work. I was just curious if anyone had ever tried using it for portait work and what the outcome was. A ringflash is definitely on my wishlist. Making a homemade one this weekend. lol
