Im in a 50/50 about whether to purchase another sb900 or a su-800 to help with my portrait business.
Having seen the price of the su800 in the hk import shops, im kinda looking more on that route.
But then was shocked at the pretty reasonable price of the R1C1 kit.

I love macro and would love to specialise in it, when not having to do portraits.
I have a cheapish Marumi ringflash that i dont get on with that well for macro.

Does anyone have any experience with the r1c1, with macro in the wildlife sense.
The 2 extra flashes would be beneficial to the portrait side too.
Is anyone expecting an update to the kit, not sure what they would update, but just its probably considered old kit in the camera world. any links to pics taken or advise would be appreciated, thanks.

I want a Nikon r1c1 too

It will have to come in after the D700, Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S & AFS 85mm f1.4...........

My bloody shopping list is getting far too large!!!!

I blame TP :bang:

lol, tell me about it.

i just really cant bear the thought of spending £200 on a bit of kit that makes my flashes fire, thats just tooo boring. if you get a new toy, it has to be a bit more special, thats why i thought the r1c1 was a good thing.

I seriously don't see the point. I would rather get a second hand SB800 or another SB600. You can always fire the rear flash in auto and get away with 2 channels !

The r1c1 would be a far far better toy !

yep, i agree to an extent.

with the r1c1 at £480, considering the little flashes are 170 each, that means your kinda getting the su800 for £140, which is well worth it. lol, just!

Stef / Darren,

Did any of you, by any chance, buy the R1C1; and have you possibly used it for portraits?

I ask, as I've been able to haggle the price of this, plus two additional SB-R200 for about £550. That's a huge saving; but if it's not useful for portraits or product photography then I'll just stick with the SB-900's.

Would like to hear your thoughts.

Pointless for portraits.

Unless you're a Forensic photographer getting closeups of dead people.

Great, thank you for the reply :)

Now I can put my money towards more SB-900 and them eneloops :D

I bought the lencarta ring light.

Maybe an r1c1 for the day job would be useful :)

So Wail, were you going to buy one with four lights?

I saw a pic of a setup on Flickr where the guy had produced a ring light out of R200s, iirc 8 of them  (Edit: actually it was 6)

McNally has an shot in HSD taken with a similar set up, produces a funky catchlight, but as to whether that alone is worth £1200.....

How good is the Lencarta ring light? I've always been in love with ring lights.

I am thinking seriously about the R1C1; just trying to justify my need for it :p

The price is just perfect, given how much this would cost in UK. I'm contemplated the R1C1 and two SB-R200; or two kits without the SU-800. But seeing that I may upgrade to a D3x soon, I may want to get the SU-800 with the kit, saves me a bit.

I think I saw that, but for sure I've seen something with 8 SB-R200.

That set-up would cost me just about £1100 here, that's an R1C1 set (with the SU-800) and six additional SB-R200; for that same money I could buy 2 SB-900 with SD-9.

Very tempting, just for the funkiness of it; if rather silly :cuckoo:

Doing the maths like that, I see that I may go with this R1C1

Wail,

The ring light arrived then I was working solidly till the day of my operation and then I have not been well enough to have a proper play. I am going to Garry Edwards studio on Sunday so should get the low down on using it then but everything I have seen points at this being rather special.

It is a real shame that they do not do a mains box like the battery box for the Safari kit as I could then use the ring flash and safari lights in the studio giving me 5 lights. I can still use the ring flash but need to make sure I switch to charge between each set of shots. With you shooting on location I would suggest that TWO double lencarta safari kits and swapping one light from one kit to a ring light (about an extra £30-50) would give you a cracking setup!! THREE portable studio lights plus the ring light and having two power packs means two power settings to. It's only money

Where have you seen the R1 C1 for £480?

I have a feeling it's all this photography gear that's getting you bedridden :p; I hope you get well soon

I keep contemplating buying a full proper studio kit, instead of the SpeedLights, but I've gone down this route far too much right now to do an about change; and I keep digging myself in deeper and deeper.

I guess it's some sort of weird fetish that I'm enjoying :cuckoo::nuts::naughty:; but it is fun, and I'm enjoying the learning curve big time.

Eventually, I will do a good order from Lencarta, I just know that; and for certain the ring flash is to be on the list along with some good battery packs.

It's only money

Now, that's the devil speaking :bang::lol:

Where have you seen the R1 C1 for £480?

I think you'll notice that post was from way back last year

By all means, that's the attitude to have

Oh, and yes they are £430 here in Saudi. Going now to buy one ; each SB-R200 is about £110 , x2 that will be :)

Sorry, I know that's rude, I offer my h

£430 that is a good price. Lucky you:)

Look at it this way, I did a saving on the flash, but the models will cost me a fortune vs. what a good model would cost in UK. In total, I'm out of pocket worse off than if I'd paid full UK price for my gear and got UK-prices on models.

Ah well, we win some, and we lose some.

I picked up the R1 and 2x SB-R200; total cost was £535. That's a pretty good price I thought. Eventually, I will add 4 SB-R200, may be next month.

I didn't go for the R1C1, as I don't have an immediate need for the SU-800, which I can buy separately for about £130 when I eventually get the D3x.

Holy thread revival... Any updates on these wonderful setups. Im sorely tempted!

I missed out on one from ebay and now they seem to be another £100 more.
