Hi.

I had the 50 1.8d and the 35 f1.8 on my d90. Both excellent. Although I thought the 35 was a stonking lens, I preferred the focal length of the 50. Just a personal preference.

If you have a kit zoom lens, take shots at 35 and 50. See which you prefer.

Hope that helps.

You will generally find that most people prefer the 35. However that is probably irrelevant as they are not taking the same shots as you are and also some people prefer the 50mm.

You really need to try both lengths and the advice to use your kit lens at the fixed lengths is the easiest way of doing that. Set it to 35 and use it for a day, set it to 50 and use it for a day and you will still find where your preference lies.

I have the 50mm and often find myself taking a couple of steps back before taking a photo. I think the 35 has a more natural FOV, and you can just point and shoot with it.

Indoors, this could be important.

I have the 35 1.8 and 50 (f1.4). My personal preference between the 2 is the 50mm. When I need to pick a lens to keep on all day when I'm wondering round on holidays etc I go for the 50.

If you do more outside than in, you may prefer the 50. If you find yourself a bit cramped for apace more often then the 35 is good.

Both fantastic lenses, equally as sharp (50/g version anyway) and both as fast as each other for AF.

I have the 35mm and 50mm f1.8d, use the 35mm most of the time.

Don't know, half a stop wider? I only got it cheap when I traded it with a DX lens, so I only "paid" £20 for it. I might eventually end up getting the F1.8 as I have one of thos discount voucher when I bought my D600 that will bring the value of a brand new F1.8 down to just over £100

£20??

The DX f1.8 is less than £150 and the 35/1.4g is like 10x that.

I saw it the other day and wondered what Nikon are playing at...

thanks all for answers, but still don't know witch one to buy :) i'm kinda newbie in photography, i love go outside and make some shots inside, i have 18-55 so tried 35 and 50 and ofc i liked both focal length :) so still i'm in a start and don't know witch one to chose, crazy

On DX the image quality from both 50mm and 35mm will be stunning.

However 35mm will give you a wider field of view. I found 50mm to be too restrictive and more suitable to portraits. In short 35mm on a DX camera will be more useful.

If you plan one day to go full frame then 50mm will be a better investment.

As for 35mm f1.4, the Nikon is crazily priced. The Sigma is much better priced and apparently better IQ too.

If you like to make some shots inside, go for the 35mm, if that's too far when outside, just walk in closer, then you are covered for both situations, later on get the 50mm if you want, I think I will be doing that, my 35mm is on order but I want the 50mm as well eventually.

Have a look HERE on Nikons site to see the different in the field of view. You can select the lens from a list to see the view for that lens (the 50mm 1.8G is at the bottom of the FX list)

I prefer the 35mm f1.8 to behonest. I use the 50mm mainly for video because it have aperture ring .....

It was a zoom lens that I traded it wasn't a prime, I think a brand new of my traded zoom is just under £300

I picked up the 35mm 1.8g from the classifieds. Was so impressed with quality of images I bought a 50mm 1.8g from MPB. I think the 35mm is the better of the 2 lenses but there's not much between them. Pick the one that suits what you want to photograph and you wont be disappointed against your kit lens.

I have both and personally prefer the 35mm, it's seldom ever off the body, versatile length and great image quality but as others have said it depends on your usual subjects.
