Yes
So I've been looking around at lenses, and the prices between the two brands of Sigma & Nikon are significant, considering the focal length is the same. Is the Nikon worth the extra £200 quid for a macro lens? I am very enthusiastic about purchasing a macro lens as it deffo does it for me, the ideas for the use of one of them are endless, but thats just me.

Your views as always much appreciated.

I don't think the Nikon lens is worth the extra outlay. In fact, I don't own any Nikon lenses;) Sigma EX all the way baby!!!

My dilemma is do I go for the 105mm, or splurge on the 150mm Macro?

your two links go to the same sigma lens! YES - the Nikon is worth it!

I'd always go Nikon, unless they didn't have a comparable lens available. The quality tends to be far superior and they hold their value better.

There was a good guide to macro lenses in one of the camera mags recently and iirc the concensus was that (depending of course on what you intend to shoot) there was no real benefit in getting anything much over 105mm.

It also depends on whether you plan to use a tripod or not. In most situations you would, but the VR on the Nikon lens will allow you to do handheld macro shots, although again whether this is beneficial depends on the subject matter.

If the difference was £5-600 (like it is with the Tamron 17-50 v the Nikon 17-55) then I would suggest the Sigma, but for £200 I'd take a deep breath and go for the Nikon.

The VR is not that useful for macro - it is useful for everything else.

The Tamron 90mm f/2.8 is a pretty good lens too...

I use the Sigma 105mm and it a great lens and produces excellent results for the cost, use the money you save to start a fund to buy a R1C1 or other ring flash - this will be much more use than the VR on the nikon lens for macro.

Is there any diff between the 2 lenses apart from the Nikon vibration reduction feature?
