Hi again,

Well I have narrowed my camera options down to 2 cameras,

1. Nikon D5000

for technical specs (which will likely be very similar and have little to no bearing on the photos that you take), you can compare them here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sidebyside.asp

nikon is a 'better brand' to buy into due to a proven track record, second hand market and availability of accessories and lenses if you choose to get more involved.
 
With the Pentax K-x you will not be restricted with your choice of lenses, with the 5000 you have to buy Lenses with the inbuilt motors for Auto focus as the 5000 does not have an in-body autofocus motor. Also the lens must be a VR for Image stabilization: whilst the Pentax has its own version SR built in, so what ever lens you attach it; you will have Image stabilization.

Pentax does not have as big a following as Nikon, but that doesn't mean it's an inferior camera.

the pentax entry level DSLR's are considered the best entry levels yet and because the brand has more of a cult following then lenses are cheaper (especially second hand) and its better if on a budget.

nikon however you pay for the brand and unfortunately cheap lenses such as the nikkor 50mm f1.8 will not autofocus on the d5000 so you have to be careful with lens selection.

me personally would go pentax because even the kit lens is made to a very high standard!
 
Go with the Nikon, less expense in the future, as your skills improve and you invest in better quality lenses, then upgrade the body.. Once you buy into a brand, it is the path that most end up sticking with a brand.

take the time to invest in better glass as money allows...
 
Its a thought i had too. As i have gone with Canon myself and realised that i will 'grow' with Canon in that i will buy some nice lenses now and then maybe sometime in the not too distant future buy a better 'body'. I can then use the good lenses on an even better body!

Not any longer .. prices have gone through the roof since the release of the K-7 and K-x.
 
half of you say pentax half say nikon, hard choise....

im planning on going to the LCE in bath soon as jessops dont have pentax while the LCE have both.

out of those 2, i would go for the kx, I was tempted to have a move from canon, but my future whenever it may be purchase of a prime 400mm made me stay with canon. I always see really good reviews of the kx,

Sorry don't know anything about the Nikon to comment, but the K-x gets very good reviews as an entry level DSLR........ it is quite small though (I have a K-m - which is basically it's predecessor)

The potential advantage of Nikon is that due to its popularity as a brand there is a plethora of used enses either Nikkor or 3rd party....... but on the flip side there's that many more potential buyers.....:shrug:

Quality wise both build and image quality, I would imagine not a lot in them.....

Nope, and 99% of Canon/Nikon users wouldn't be buying that sort of lens either. There is a 600mm f4 though (if you can find one).

I am not saying that Pentax is perfect by any means, its certainly no good for a professional wanting long fast lenses and it doesn't bother me one jot whether somebody chooses Nikon, Canon, Sony or whatever. I will however stand up for the brand when told I am not serious about photography because I choose to use Pentax.

Now .. excuse me while I go check if the 7D has come down in price this morning.

I would suggest buying a s/h Nikon from here or a reputable dealer. I went for the D200 from Digital Depot. It takes all the older lenses, is solidly built and has been faultless.

I grew up with and still have a Pentax film camera but for availability of s/h lenses and for a future proof upgrade path I would go for Nikon out of the two.

Mind you I like the look of that Digital medium format Pentax - that would tempt me.:love:

Im going to ask for both and see what there like but i am more temptrd towards the pentax....
 
I'd take the Nikon over the Pentax, although I'm a Canon man myself.

If your swayng towards Pentax then try and wait till Nov' time they have two new DSLR's out so I was told from a pentax shop last Saturday..:)

I'v been with Nikon 20 years, Pentax 2 years and Canon 3, and wish I had stayed with Nikon, back now and happy..

I have no time to wait, i need a new camera now, but saying that when they are realised i might be able to get an ex-stock pentax k7 cheap
