Nikon or Canon

I am looking to buy myself a new DSLR, I used a Nikon F4 previously, then had a Nikon Coolpix 5700. Now I am not sure whether to go for Nikon D90, D7000 or Canon 650D or 60D. I will be using it to do Studio photography as well as Landscapes. Would just like some of your thoughts, pros and cons of them as I am sure some of you have owned these and can give me some guidance. Having a quick hands on in a shop is no substitute for peoples experiences.

Why is the answer Nikon or Canon?

Analyse your requirements, budget, etc WITHOUT thinking about brands.

Once you know your requirements, research ALL brands that fit.

Go and handle them.

Then buy what feels right. You might be surprised at what you end up with ;)

In case you wonder, I ended up with Pentax! No regrets.

That sounds far too logical, can't see that working :)

To make it easy and slightly extending on above;

Creata a table with must have requirements and nice to have requirements in first column. Then add a column for each camera you fancy and tick the boxes against each requirement it meets.
Any that don't have all the must haves get removed straight off leaving you with a number of cameras that meet all the must haves so any of them would meet your requirement.
You can then clearly see the nice to haves and let those make the final decision.

If you then buy something that you shouldn't have and let your heart rule at least you know you went against the 'correct' camera for you.

Ok I think I have some testing to do. Thanks for all your comments and I will take them into consideration.

Stormcrow, great link, will have a play later.

As said many times above, go into a shop and have a feel of all the bodies that are in the group you are thinking of buying.

I am currently using a borrowed Nikon D200 and have to say it fits nicely in my hand. I had an Olympus E410 before that, bought it as was at a bargain price, was great to get me started, but felt small in my hand and didnt fit well.

I have also had a play with a friends Nikon D3100, nice camera, but too small in the body.

If you have a few photography mates, ask if you can borrow their cameras for a few hours, go out and play. Keep an open mind, you may have a feeling that camera A is the one, but if after trying you notice one feels better, then go with it.

If the camera you choose has a few models in same camera size, then pop back and ask advice on which one, but you are the one who will be using it, so it has to feel right.

Sorry folks leaving here, don't bother replying I will not be back.

To the mods: I was pretty new here (but not to photography or photography forums) and, whilst I am certain there are genuine members here, there are far too much pointless squabbling for me to bother further. I came here to offer advice on what I know and seek advice on what I don't not to re-visit the playground.

Sorry but this place is a waste of my time, I hope things improve and good luck for the future.

I guessed you missed the "No 'goodbye' posts. If you wish to leave the forums or site, we regret that you are doing so, but please do so quietly." rule

A Canon vs Nikon thread is always going to end up in a playground situation and I would be very surprised if that didn't happen on every forum available.

It's ironic that you were the person to begin the d800 discussion that derailed the thread in the first place. :bonk:
Oh and well done on keeping the off topic discussion going :bang:

The original poster may want to look at the following site as you can compare images of a range of different cameras just in case image quality is one of the things that will help you decide. http://www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM

I guess you've not read any of my other posts. The D800 posts were merely a side-track. I just jump in where the action is at times. I don't really care that much about which gears beats what gear. Nobody is ever changing their minds based on forum debates/arguments.

I do. I see that as the main point of the debate and which is why I question and debate points so much (much to the annoyance of other probably :) )

I put my view forward, others put theirs and I may or may not modify my views based on the outcome of the debate.

Not everybody is narrow minded...

Well put and I agree.

Nor am I thank you very much. My mind is constantly open. What I meant was, if you actually take into account not everything written is B&W! or what you imagine it to mean ... is nobody is going to suddenly switch to another camera make or model just because someone is ranting about how great another is. So these arguments are by and large redundant from the kick off. Maybe some are weak minded if they do switch based on these silly debates ;)

Take a few seconds to consider what people are actually saying before having your little pops. Seems people do nothing in this section other than jump into the middle of threads with negativity mode on from the off.

Phil, don't be such a lick arse eh ... since you start half the arguments in this section needlessly ;) good lad.

1) your attitude stinks.
2) start arguments in this section? Have a look back will you and see you're just annoyed with me because I said the D800 doesn't mop the floor clompletely over the MK3.

I beg to differ. Only you have your hands, only you know if the different cameras fit comfortably in them. Only you know if the buttons are located in comfortable positions for your fingers and thumbs.

You will get great comments about all the cameras you mentioned, but that's from other people, it doesn't help you decide what's right for you.

They are all good at what they do, and all roughly in the same market, so it's comes down purely to how they feel in your hand, and how you find the menu systems and ergonomics.

The man speaks the truth. Only you can decide which feels better to you. Niether of them make a bad camera

Don't take it so personally, I didn't say you were narrow minded.

And debates are always a good thing, yes nobody is going to switch their system from Canon to Nikon based on a forum thread but it should open their eyes to differences they may not have considered and know for next time.
Even two people who seem to 100% disagree with each can leave the discussion with new thoughs and perspectives and even be able to admit to themselves they may not have been thinking straight.
Again, only if they are open minded to it.

When I owned a Nikon, women would not look at me. Even those who were somewhat below plain. Soon as I bought a Canon, I had Jessica Alba stalking me on a continuous basis.

That has not even been mentioned on DxO. Remember, it isn't just what they mention but also what they fail to mention.

Canon has the lady factor.

I think you'll find it has nothing to do with Canon/Nikon it's the 300mm lens you were equiped with that attracted their attention.;)

Funny, the reverse happened to me.

Maybe, they do seem to stare in awe of the 'big grey one' :p

I have to agree on the last comment, as real men use Nikon ha ha.

If my work mate had let me use a canon body instead of nikon, no doubt I would be in the canon club now.

Phil I must say when there's controversy and bickering your name is usually nestled nicely into the thread. Why can't everyone just agree to disagree lol

Its possibly unfortunately for me that I just have one of those personalities that will argue my point.

I always mean things in the nicest possible way and actually if you read my posts, rather than seeing me as the guy that always argues, actually I'm pretty fair I just won't be walked over and that sometimes means people get me wrong.

I don't start arguments, I just will just reason my advice.

You will never see me being I'll manored unless its absolutely deserved.

This thread was a prime example. Cagey75 was trying to tell the thread that in every situation aside from MP the d800 wipes the floor with the 5dmk3...I just pointed out that it doesn't on everything.

It does annoy me that some people don't read everything I write and just see my name in arguments, it means threads don't get answered and I don't get help even though I put a lot of valid advice out there and critique....oh well.

I'm OK to disagree but what you'll find is you get a personality like me that is always going to clash, and that's life, not exclusive to forums.

First and final warning, anymore of this infantile bickering and some people will be earning time off. The staff here have better things to do than oversee your petty squabbles and your behaviour will not be tolerated any more.

Post with courtesy and respect for everyone on here and there won't be a problem.

Most cameras these days have very little between them in terms of IQ. The main things that make the camera right is the ergonomics, the fps, buffer size and AF which is down to the model.

Hear hear. This thread should be locked IMHO as it was pointless from the off, but you're the Boss.

Why was it pointless? Someone asked a valid question about a range of cameras which got answered, but then the thread went completely off topic by a load of people arguing about the D800 and 5D.

Maybe if those people had kept out of it, the OP wouldnt have left and would have thanked those who actually gave proper advice.

Because asking which brand is better than the other ALWAYS sparks off these useless debates. No offence to the OP, but it's always best to go try the cameras out than take random suggestions from fans of either side on the net. Everyone knows this. And as for people should stay out of it? That's the point of discussion when these questions are posed. Now please don't start another argument. Stay on topic, or leave it be. I am ...

I'm not sure it got answered but no different than any other which camera thread really.

I really don't understand how people can get so passionate about an object, especially when 99.99% of people looking at the photo couldn't care less what camera took it.

Buy what you like, use what you enjoy using but don't tell everybody else they should use the same.

i use canon, but would i swap sides? some times yes i would, some nice features on nikon side that i wish canon would bring over

I take it no-one actually took notice of my reply when I said its up to him to try out all the cameras he listed to see which he prefers as no-one can tell him how he will get on with any of them.

You'd all rather argue over something that wasnt even mentioned in the original post.

I give up, I really do..

While I agree with that it is not really an answer, which is my defense for missing it :)
The best thing people could do is spend 30 minutes looking at some Decision Analysis sites. Use that to narrow down the choices and then go and try the 2 or 3 that come through the analysis as they are the choices that will fit the requirement.
No input from anyone is needed as nobody else knows the full set of requirements or how it fits the hand etc,.

He listed 4 bodies he was interested in..

I told him to try each one as they are all much of a muchness in term of specs for the things he wanted to photograph. The only real differences in them is handling.

I said quite clearly, only he knows how they will handle in his hand, no-one can tell him that.

How is that any different from what you just said, bar using a website to tell you what you would find out in the shop.

It isn't very different which is why I agreed with you!

However, decision analysis is not using a website, the website is to explain the process. You then go to a shop and try the narrowed down list. Not many shops would have all 4 of those cameras so would need to narrow it down and go to two shops possibly. Even if the cameras are a much of a muchness some feature will be more required than others (you or I would not know what those are)

Why I don't think it is really an answer is it is not really telling him what he needs to know (but again I agree it is the best option)

Looks like I really put a cat among the pigeons when I started this thread. As you may see I am new here and i wasn't really expecting a definite answer. I suppose I was looking for some constructive remarks from users on some of the negative attributes on these cameras. As I have since read some people hate the buttons on the 60D. I am sure there is something that bugs you or wish you could change about your camera. This giving me a good indication whether the camera would suit me.
