hi there i have just had a nikon d7000 with many problems so has been returned for refund and am now stuck on what to buy to be honest the nikon d7000 didnt do anything for me as for my previouse d5000 which i loved
i am now torn between the canon 600d and the nikon d5100 which i think is more for me as im only an amature please help me choose before my brain explodes
 
If you loved the D5000 would the D5100 be best for you?

TBH Peter, others point of view won't really help with what's best for you as both cameras pretty much do the same thing. Canon users will, for the most part, recommend Canon and Nikon users will, for the most part, recommend Nikon.

I'm curious as to why you feel that the Nikon will be more suited as you are an amateur. They're both entry level cameras, are they not?
 
Choice of camera is not all down to its spec. Don't forget that handling is also a major consideration. Does one camera feel more comfortable to hold? Are the ergonomics best suited?

If you have any Nikon lenses, it may be more economical to stay with Nikon rather than buy additional Canon lenses.
 
thanks for the help very true about recomendations im going to have a real think tho before i make the purchase step
 
I'd also try a sony A77 while you're in the shop :)

What was it about the D7000 that you didn't like?
 
ive had 4 d7000 now and every one has had marks in the focus screen when i have recived them also they dont seem to focus where you want them to
 
Perhaps you should be thinking about the entry lenses between companies.

Nikon 18-55 afs VR vs canon efs 18-55 IS 2: Nikon much sharper wide open than canon & at f8.

Nikon afs 55-200mm VR vs efs Canon 55-250mm: Nikon much sharper wide open at all lengths & at f8.

Nikon afs 16-85mm VR vs canon efs 17-85mm IS: same as above.

Nikon afs 18-135 vs Canon efs 18-135: Nikon sharper wide open until the long end where it is evenly met by canon. At f8 they are the same.

Both companies are pretty similar in their "pro" lenses but Nikon for the most part, have sharper optics than canon equivalent in the more budget lenses and superzooms. This means that when using the same entry level equipment, your shots wide open with the right technique, in theory can look more detailed with Nikon.

but Peter has previous experience with using nikon kit which is probably the reason why he is looking into buying another nikon body probably because of lenses etc. asking why he thinks the nikon will be more suited is pretty stupid for two equal cameras, he will have to make a decision at some point.

I think you need to ask yourself what the D5000 didn't give you that you expected the D7000 to provide ... and does the D5100 et al promise to provide that?

Thanks for the insult but please read the 2 posts again (mine and his). You will see the words "the nikon d5100 which i think is more for me as im only an amature" and is why I was saying" I'm curious as to why you feel that the Nikon will be more suited as you are an amateur".
 
i'd say it's a bit drastic to change brands due a a bad experience with your d7000.....firstly, seeing as it hasn't been mentioned is what lenses you have? do you really need a top lcd? if not, maybe the d3200 will suffice?
 
If you were happy with the D5000 then i am sure the D5100 will be equally as pleasing for you.
 
where did you buy your camera? 4x D7000 with problem ........ first time i heard of that problem for D7000. I use to hate my D7000 when i first got it because it feels like the image quality is not good and focus is abit off but when i start invest in quality glass the whole world change on my D7000.
