.....The ultimate question....

I have about £500-600 to spend on a new camera.

What are peoples suggestions?

I shoot portraits and events mainly, the occasional landscape :)

Would be great to hear what you recommend.

Thanks all in advance :)

What's wrong with your sony? First thing we need to know is what your current camera isn't doing that you would want your next one to do.

And does the budget have to include lenses?

My Sony is starting to pack up, its performance doesnt seem to be what it used to. So i thought it would be time for an upgrade :)

The budget will need to include a lens.

Any need to move away from sony? Then you could at least keep the 18-55 lens, which frees up at the very least £50 you would have to spend on an equivalent kitlens if you moved brands.

I don't know the sony models that well, but I know some of their midrange models roughly around your budget got good reviews.
I'm sure someone more clued up with their models could recommend some to consider.

Second hand Sony a700 - £350-400
Second hand Sony/KM 50mm f1.7 - £70
Second hand Tamron - 17-50 f2.8 - £160ish.

Would make a good upgrade from your current model.

Forgot to say, you could also pick up a used a580 for the same price.

How do you feel about EVFs? That could open the door to buying an A33 or a55.

Buying a camera is very much personal choice and nowadays there's loads to choose from. My advice would be go to your nearest camera shop and try out as many camera's in your budget range and see which you feel comfortable holding and can use all the controls easily.

You might what a small compact camera like the Panasonic G series, or something slightly bigger, the canon xxxxD or xxxD series or a larger body like the Dxxxx Nikon or xxD canon. Don't dismiss the Olympus or Sony offerings either or Nikon's V1 or Sony's NEX 5.

At the end of the day, buy something that you feel comfortable holding, that has the require lenses you need and that fits with your budget.

Don't be afraid to go second hand, there are some very good older camera's that would meet your need just as well as the brand new camera's. Ffordes, Camtech, Mifsuds, MPB Photographic, Park Camera's or Digital Depot are recommended in the UK.

Personally I would avoid the kit offerings, as the lenses usually are just about fit for purpose, but I accept your budget restraints, so its an affordable way to get started if buying new.

Not sure about high end level but in entry level Canon could beat Nikon easily :) Nikon lenses are quite expensive for your budget :)

I could suggest you to get 550D. The rest of your budget can be spend for flash, bag, memory, lens ... etc

Nikon lenses are on a parr with canon across the range

 Agree with this.

As has been said above don’t get drawn into the Nikon is better / Canon is better / cheaper / stronger etc debate. Ideally you need to get into a camera store and handle some cameras. You may find that one brands feels better for you, controls better placed for your preference etc.

Obviously it's down to your needs but unless you are shooting studio setups regularly I wouldn’t worry too much about tethered shooting. Perhaps a Wi-Fi enabled SD card would suffice so you could send images back to the PC?
