Nikon or Canon

got any friends that own a dslr? if so go with whatever they have. You can learn from them or with them and share gear. Reality is not much between most equivalent cameras from different brands. A canon shooter will say buy canon and a Nikon user will say buy Nikon.

So buy canon :)

i say go to a local shop and get a hand on both camera and see which one feels better for you first.

Then have a play so you have a good start on which one you favour more.

I say get Nikon because i'm a nikon fan boy lol

Whichever felt more suited to me upon trying them out in the shop. Ergonomics are a very important factor for most people and are a very personal thing.

Wanting a new camera brand aside which would you go for out of the D7000 and the 60D and why?

Thanks Gary

Long term Canon & Nikon users tend to be blinkered because of previous system investment but both are fine options.

Out of the two - go and see which feels best to use and obviously check whether one gives you something you need that the other doesn't.

Hi Gary.

Think about your budget...Nikon tend to have much better quality in their lower end optics than canon (the sharpness in the 18-55 is pro quality and the & all settings being equal most people wouldn't tell the difference between the £200 55-200mm and the near £2000 70-200mm f2.8!).

Aside from that they are very similar nowadays...so go and see what feels best for you but remember, when you buy a dslr, the bottomless pit of money starts...usually with optics.

Good luck.

Hi Gary & welcome

As above posts have recommended, go and try the makes / models out and see which feels best to you, which works on terms of button layout / menu function for you.

Do you have any family or friends that have cameras ? What's your previous experience with cameras.

OPERATION in the hand swung it for me - NIKON had the controls for the Sutter and Aperture in the right place, Logical place for me on the body....

Should of said I have played with both and liked them equally. Both felt well balanced in the hand. For some reason Iam leaning more towards the Nikon, can't quite put my finger on why.
It does seem to me that the Nikon extras (glass, flashes etc) cost more than Canon.
Oh and I am not totally new to using cameras. Use to own Mamiya RZ67 aswell as SLR cameras and did all my own processing.

I think cost of glass and accessories should be around the same cost.

The thing about Canon to me is more review i see and people only talk about Canon L glass.

Where as Nikon most of their product is compliment by people all the way from cheap lens to expensive lens.

Nikon cheap lens build and perform better in my own opinion. i.e 35mm f1.8G, 50mm 1.8D etc

I had the same dilemma, best friend has a 60D, a pro photographer friend has a 5DII and I went for a D7000 and I am so pleased with it.

The high ISO performance is much better than the 60D, twin memory cards is nice, beautiful build quality, 39 point AF and full Colur RGB metering, the Canon has only 9 AF points.

That said, you would not be disappointed in either

Jason

I went with canon as I perfer there number system for bodies. Im still new to it and couldnt get my head round nikons numbers or pricing. I really want to try a nikon with 39af points.

Neither prefer Pentax's offering

I was the same years ago and I ended up going down the Canon route and have been very pleased with the bodies / lenses I've had / got.

I helped a good friend out approx 2 years ago, who had the same dilema, his father had a Nikon and he was going to go Nikon route, purely for this reason, off we went to the shops, had a play with different models and he preferred the Canon. For him, as yourself (with the Nikon), there was just something about the Canon he preferred.

He's just upgraded to the 60D and loves it

I had the same dilemma. I liked both when I picked them up and had a play with them. In the end, I looked at the features of both and decided that the Nikons better 39 point AF, and dual card slots would be better for me than the 60D's 9 point AF and single card slot. Not mention the better build quality and slightly higher burst rate.

And, the kit lens with the Nikon is somewhat better than the Canons. Better optically, and more versatile.

Nice one Gary - you will love it!

I have no hesitation to shoot at 12,800 iso and have taken many great shots with 25,600 iso...have a read and get used to Nikon's 3D autofocus - simply amazing! Let us know what you think!

Welcome to Nikon...the best :) Soon you will hate canon users too lol

Phil.

Cheers bud.

Maybe not HATE them more pity them :)

Wellafter being let down on the D7000. Pixmania said they had one but they did not. Lying buggers.
Got a full refund.
Have got me a nice shiny Canon 7D + 18-135 IS lens and I love it.
Now just have to learn how to use it!

That twiddley dial on the front of the nikons is the work of the devil. BUY CANON!

On a more serious note, I honestly can't get to 'grips' with the ergonomics for the Nikons (excuse the pun), which really just shows how important the way a camera feels in the hand can impact which system you buy.
