Hi all
I do very limited editing & use Nikon NX.Been quite happy with it & has worked fine till last wednesday when it stopped doing batch conversions from RAW to jpeg .It started giving error message "out of memory" after converting approx 40 of 178 raw files.
Checked Nikon site for updates but seemingley am running latest version.
Today spent 1hour on phone to computer boffins trying to sort it out & they came to conclusion 'puter needed restoring to earlier date.(pc world, only had damm thing 3 months) Went through restore to date I kew it was working ok. Still same problem with Nikon NX.
Then spent 5 hours doing full factory reset(back to to new status) & then reloading all my programs, websites etc etc.
Just reloaded Nikon NX & still got problem. Now it will only convert 3 files then just stops

Anybody can help at all?

thanks in real hope

Have you checked how much disk space you have left? something may have filled up the free space (virus?) failing that check to see if all your ram is showing up ok, 1 stick may have gone bad.
It might be worth clearing cache and temp files as well.

Is there enough free hard disc space on the drive where NX is installed, or the images are being saved to?

How much memory should you have and, is it all showing as running? 'My computer' 'System'

What other programs are eating resourses that didn't use to?

Have you selected lower CPU/memory usage for power saving?

You could try upping the running priority of NX, once it is running. Ctrl,Alt, delete to start the task manager. Click on processes tab, find NX in the list. Right click and select the priority to high.

HI wayne, Having just done a full factory restore there is nothing on the computer except for Nikon NX. According to the graph I have 2001 MB of memory unused .Think I'll just take the darn thing back to PC world

Neil,
IT's showing 256GB free of 291GB
Wouldn't know how to select power saving
Found the NX program in the list but when I clicked for high priority the screen falshed up & said it may unbalance other stuff so left it as is.
It worked fine whe last used in spetember ,full factory reset should have sorted any software problems(so PC world told me) so think it may be a cream crackered internal bit?

I also have problems with NX2 Capture regarding memory which seems to be your problem too. After editing a relatively small number of picture the program starts to slow down and sometimes freezes or closes down. I think it's more of a software issue than a hardware fault so resetting your PC will have little effect. It is possible that resetting has changed a setting which has made the problem worse. My problem normally resolves itself with a program restart though.

I normaly select CS4 to high priority when I know the laptop is going to be stretched. Usualy helps by relegating the minor processes behind CS4 instead of sharing RAM with them

Power saving may not be applicable if on a desk top, but could be an issue on a laptop... though probably not an issue if you don't know where to look

A full system restore doesn't always help, sadly it often fails to reset everything, many viruses block it or interfear with it in one way or another. When you say NX is the only thing on it that doesn't sound right either, when you did the ctrl+alt+delete how many running processes were their? (the list where you had to set priority) was there just a few or lots?
Uninstalling a program often doesn't uninstall ever part of it,many programs leave behind registry entries or other files, there may be a clean up program to fully remove it all from nikon (before re-installing) if the bit left behind is the problem your back where you started if you just do a normal reinstall.
All that said your not the olny person getting these errors, it seems theres lots of people with similar/same problems which suggest a bug in NX.
Some say clearing the cache helps, others dont, but it might be worth a go. Also check for any updates from nikon, there may be a fix.

You could try doing a batch convert in ViewNX2 - it's free, downloadable and will handle simple edits of RAW files. It's a step in proving whether your version of NX is corrupted.

This is from the Nikon Cafe forum, and shows how to set up you computer for optimum performance with NX:

Getting your computer ready
Many Café participants have reported fundamental problems using the Windows version of Capture NX, such as crashing and unacceptable speed issues. It is possible that those issues occur because their computer’s operating system does not meet Nikon's requirements. It’s important to get your computer ready before and after installing Capture NX. The 4-step process I suggest is described below.

Step #1: About Windows 32-Bit Edition
Windows XP and Vista are available in 32-bit and 64-bit editions. Capture NX is compatible with the 32-bit versions. Some Café members who have tried using a 64-bit version have reported major issues in the threads. Your first step toward getting your computer ready for Capture NX is to make sure the 32-bit version, not the 64-bit version, is installed on your computer.

Step #2: Installing .NET Framework 2.0 and its Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Your second step has to do with two essential software components that Nikon requires to be installed on your Windows system: .NET Framework 2.0 and the .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

.NET Framework is the core of every Windows operating system. .NET Framework 2.0 is in Windows XP and .NET Framework 3.0 is in Windows Vista.

However, after .NET Framework 2.0 was released, parts of it were rewritten to correct major bugs. Those rewrites are included in the .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1). That Service Pack must be added to your computer’s operating system. That’s true for both XP and Vista even though the later release of .NET Framework 3.0 is part of Vista.

So, before installing Capture NX, install .NET Framework 2.0 and install .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Equally important, install them in that order.

You might be aware that the Capture NX installation software is supposed to automatically install the two components if they are not already on your computer system. However, Café members have reported in the threads that the automated method does not always properly work. Also, the dialog boxes that report the progress of installing the two components can be misleading, causing you to believe the automated installation has been completed even though it is still in progress. If you reboot your computer too soon thanks to the misleading information, you will eventually begin working with Capture NX even though the installation is not proper or complete. To be safe, your best bet is that you not rely on the Capture NX installation software to install the .NET Framework 2.0 or the .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Step #3: Installing Capture NX
Install Capture NX. Once you have completed that, you’re almost done with the process of preparing your computer.

Step #4: Steroids for Capture NX
The stuff explained previously in this tutorial makes Capture NX work. This section is all about making it work faster. Certain operations will probably perform much faster. It also might improve the stability of Capture NX.

Capture NX was developed using a Microsoft program called Visual Studio, which incorporates and uses Visual C++ libraries. To ensure that your computer system is using the latest versions of the C++ libraries, there are two files you can download and install. They will add the latest versions of the runtime components to your computer. People who have installed them have reported in the threads that they experience tremendously improved speed during certain operations. Use the following links to access and download the two files:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)

Important: Install them in the order shown above.

Summary
To ensure the best performance of Nikon Capture NX, the following products should be installed in the order shown below:
1) 32-bit edition of Windows XP or Vista
2) .NET Framework 2.0
3) .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
4) Capture NX
5) Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)
6) Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)

I had problems with ViewNX & capture before where it would load then when I went to open a image it would cloe itself down.. Removed them & got another editing software program in the end as that was driving me mad...

Ran them on a netbook (if that helps anyone) even upped the memory as well but still kept crashing....

Could it be that some of the Nikon software had a bug in it

The information davekiddle posted from Nikon Cafe forum is a bit dated. I've just checked with the NX2 download pages which states OS compatability. Capture NX2 with all the latest modern Windows OSs except XP 64bit - if your machine is only 3 months old I doubt very much you have this.

Can you state which version of NX2 you're using and which camera you're using to produce your RAW images?

In the past I've had all the issues which the Nikon Cafe forum mentions but I'm fairly confident all these issues were addressed and fixed.

When you say Nikon NX what program do you mean?
There is Capture NX which has been superseded by Capture NX2, now on version 2.2.5
There is also View NX which has been superseded by View NX2, now on version 2.01

I have a 3/4 year old computer with a 2.2GHz processor, 2GB Ram and a 325GB Hard Drive, not exactly top spec, and it runs both Capture NX2 and View NX2 with no problems.

There are some cache settings in Capture NX2 which can help it to run faster:

Click on Edit / Preferences / Cache Settings. Under Editing Cache make sure that Use Image Cache & Cache Files Within the Editor are ticked and that Cache Files Created in a Batch Process is NOT ticked (unless you are only Batch Processing a few and you will need to go back through each one again)

The Cache Location is better if it is on another drive but don't worry if you only have 1 drive just leave it as it is (probably C:\Users\ etc etc )
Untick Limit Cache Size and set the slider as high as you can while considering your hard disk size. If you look opposite the Cache Location words you will see the amount of hard drive space you have free, set your cache slider so that it is at least 15GB as long as the free hard drive space less the 15 GB is reasonable.

Hi Barry,I belive it's just Nikon Viewer NX I'm running on Windows 7 home premium 64 bit.
D80 camera & all has been working fine since start of August.
Done loads of conversions without a hitch.
Just the memory problem started on wednesday which according to PC world was a PC problem. Now done the factory restore the problem is slightly different in that I ask it to convert 1 picture, the progress bar comes up then immediatley goes off & the photo isn't converted. I think this may be due to a graphic's media card possibly not installed on the system from the factory. About to take it back to PC world & get ratty :-)

SUVV:
IT's not capture NX ,All I have is View NX & Nikon transfer .I can't see edit preferences, only have options which shows cahche location but doesn't seem to alow me to alter it at all in View NX

I agree with Suvv - al thoguh I would recommend getting it from the uk/eu site. I've experienced some 'terrortorial' problems trying to install a US version of Nikon software in the past.

ViewNX2 is quite cutting edge when you consider it's free. It doesn't even splutter when it encounters a Canon jpg image. :help:

Thanks for the replies, managed to get my old puter up n running albeit very very slowly. Shop seems convinced there is a motherboard issue as program ran sweetly for 2 1/2 months then encountered memory fault & now won't run program at all probably due to the lack of this grahics board thing. So sent away, temper vented at pc world. When it's back I shall try n install the View NX 2 as advised above.
thanks again

Just reloaded Nikon NX & still got problem. Now it will only convert 3 files then just stops

Lynne - when uninstalling and reinstalling View NX, Nikon recommend deleting the relevant registry keys before reinstalling, i.e.

1. Uninstall View NX
2. Delete registry keys (see ** below)
3. Reinstall View NX (preferably View NX2)

** See the link in this post http://www.nikondigital.org/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/48022/Nikon_ViewNX_problems_fixed which takes you to here
http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/361. The 'manual' method described is easy - but don't make a mistake or you could screw up Windows.
