Hi - I have a Nikon D90 and started shooting in RAW format but have been unable to open the files. I only have Photoshop 7 so a bit old. What can I do?

Not sure about photoshop 7, but it sounds like you need the raw file reader for it. You need to go on their site and look under support and see if there are any updated raw readers for that program. Should get you sorted.

Kev.

Use capture NX to save files as tiff and open in ps7

Raw therapee should work too.

Remember the nikon codec to view in file explorer as thumnails.

Camera would have come with the software, or download it from the Nikon site, hth

I use Faststone to view and sort NEFS but it only shows you the embedded jpegs, and its editing abilities are limited.

For RAW conversion I use Raw Therapee - it is free, fast and amazingly powerful, has a small footprint and the documentation that comes with it is quite good.

You should already have ViewNX that came with your D90 but personally I find it terribly slow and clunky.

You'll need the 'Camera Raw' plug-in for photoshop, not sure which version would be compatible with photoshop 7.

Hi Gareth,

I think you will find that the version of the NEF codec that supports the D90 doesn't support PS7.

The simplest work-around is to use ViewNX to convert your NEF files to TIFF and then edit those in PS7.

Pretty sure PS7 won't support the newer NEF formats...You'll need CS or newer to do that...

the NEF codec is for windows not PS7

You can download Adobe DNG convertor for free

Convert the raws to DNG and then use in PS7 ?

If you aren't going to use Nikon software to edit your raw files, Gimp is as good as anything..:)

Thanks for all the info guys. I think to save a lot of hassle, I think I'm going to invest in either Elements 8 or if budget allows, CS4.
As usual, loads of great advice.

Thanks again.
Gareth

CS 5 is imminent.
