Nikon mirrorless definitely on the way

I went to my local Calumet and had a play with a Z7 this morning. It handles very well, seems well built and to be honest just felt better to use than the Sony's probably because I am so familiar with Nikon, it was certainly a lot more comfortable to hold and use. If it had of had 2 card slots I definitely would have bought 2 Z6's. Only had in hand for a few minutes but the auto focus seemed pretty much bang on and I didn't see any hunting or missed focus even when using the adaptor with F mount lenses.Would have liked to have had a bit longer with it but there was a bit of a queue of people waiting to play with it.
TBH just looking at images I can see that it's likely to be more comfortable to hold than the A7's, and importantly have more room between the grip and lens. After my initial huge disappointment at the announcement of these cameras I'm now coming around to thinking that they'll actually be nice cameras. I still don't think the spec/performance matches the price tag though, and in this regards you'f be hard pressed to choose the zeds over the mark iii Sonys. As it is, neither are going to sway me from the D850 and EM1 combo. Maybe in 2-3 years they'll have something that will (y)

Update ....

Harrisons have 2 Nikon days coming up on the 12th and 22nd, they are hoping the Z-system will be at both but they have asked for confirmation. Will let you know if I hear anything.
Here's their response to me :(

No doubt they look quite nice and be good to hold in the hand. Just held back by a few features I would need!

Don't worry..... buy a Sony A7 III with Battery grip instead lol :D Ergonomic problem solved. ;)
Nope, tried the grip and made it worse for me ;)

Darn... for me the Sony ergonomics are fine, I just adapted from body to body but understand its very user specific.
The Nikon Z body looks comfortable :)

I think that for some the biggest improvement in handling, a transformation actually, would come from peeling off the Sony badge and applying either a Canon or Nikon one.

The toy like terrible handling Sony would instantly be a stylish and ergonomic dream camera :D

Fair point.... I have to admit, the Nikon brand is nice, I wouldn't have minded if the Sony A9 was made by Nikon.... Nikon A9 mmmm nice! :D

I have the same thoughts to be honest I would have preferred to stay with Nikon but the 1 card slot was a killer for me personally. I could have put aside the other disadvantages compared too Sony at the moment but not that as there is a lot to like about the Z's. Anyway my A7III arrives today so that's the start of me switching sytems but I probably won't switch completely as there is just some things I just love about my Nikon's. When Nikon eventually decide to bring out a dual card slot full frame mirrorless camera there is a good chance I will jump back into the fold.

The big issue is space between the grip and lens tbh. But, with these smaller bodies my pinky finger hangs off the bottom, and then when you add the grip if just fouls up against the actual grip part and feels uncomfortable. Also it throws the balance off when using in portrait orientation.

The dual card slot thing still dragging on, haven't you lot stated you're not buying at least 20 times already?
It will drag on until Nikon release their Pro mirrorless body :D lol

I watched the Northrop’s video.
Totally over the top.
It was like they had just received news their favourite grandparent had died.
Haha but you have to understand, like others, they have been waiting for the Nikon mirrorless system for years.
A lot of people including me are disappointed it didn't meet our expectations. There is no excuse, they held back to protect their top end DSLR sales. The wrong move in my opinion!

Have you tried any of those other hand grip things that extend the body a little bit like the meike mk-x1em?

No, no point for me as there’s not enough room between the grip and lens anyway ;)

Hi all i just had a hands on with the z7!! with @dancook who was around the area from my work

here are my intial thoughts:

pros:
Better grip and ergonomics then the A9/A7r3
Able to automatically transfer via bluetooth the shots u take but in full res jpg to your phone while you shoot.
AF indoors was fast and smooth on the 35 f1.8 lens
Touch screen on menu is great

Cons:
Rolling shutter and banding in silent shooting mode(@dancook tested this)
35 1.8 lens nearly as big as a 35 1.4

Overal it looks like a camera that can take a beating but if i was a d850 owner i would skip and wait for gen 2 that should fix some of the obvious shortcomings already mentioned here(like 1 card slot, buffer capacity)

Its a good start from Nikon though But as always you should decide if this camera is for you based on your needs and wants.

What a time to be in photography!!

Interesting that you mention the bluetooth aspect. That's not something I'd really picked up on before. Does this go a small way to appeasing those worried about 1 slot? Okay, not quite the same as 2 cards full of raw files but maybe an acceptable insurance policy. Although, you'd assume it would hammer battery life.

Getting the Sony was disconcerting, it didn't feel especially good in hand but it did make my reasonably comfortable Nikon feel stupidly over sized. I still find the Sony to be a bit of a lump, as I use smaller lenses it's perfectly fine and the small body is convenient.

As it's one of the most commonly criticised points I hope this is something they focus on for the R IV but there's still so many weird oversights to tackle, a proper touch screen interface for instance.

Cheers, I'm a bit confused about the Fuji and Canon comment though being as it's a Nikon day ;)

Lol ooops I copied it straight off my email.
I also asked about when they would get in samples of the Canon R and XT-3 :D
Really intrigued with the Fuji XT-3.
Having owned the Fuji system before, it was mainly the XT-2 body which I couldn’t get on with...

I keep being tempted by Fuji for some reason, and I have no idea why. I thought I liked the idea of manual controls but when I had the XT1 I just found it all a bit fiddly, and of course there was the rendering issue. But for some reason I keep wanting to try it again

That makes two of us... :o :D

I'm seriously tempted to go back to Fuji with the X-T3 for general photography, and keep my D500 with the 200-500mm zoom for wildlife and birds.

Quite a good plan actually.

Like fuji, just found af lacking in previous, the new sensor has enough pixels and the base iso improved but still 160. Battery life isnt great. Lenses aren't cheap but nice, overall the best apsc system imo.

I agree, when I moved to the Fuji XT-2 with a nice range of XF lenses, I missed quite a bit of the Sony tech, Eye-AF, ISO/DR and AF-C etc.
I’ve just been looking at some photos I took with my XT-2 and 56mm f1.2 / 90mm f2.0 lenses are they are nice.

... the thing is.... Xt3 plus 56 = 2150, A73 plus fe 85 1.8 is only another 400, that 400 gets you a lot more.

I also dont like that Fuji hasn't updated the 35 1.4 with new AF motors, my guess is so they can push the 33 1.0 when its out. The 23 1.4 just doesnt deliver like a 35 1.4 on FF, difficult to get that wide open dreamy look on smaller format using a wider lens.

Wait, 33/1.0? Is this rumour or for real?
