I realize that these were discontinued in 2006, however they seem to be extremely rare - how would I go about finding one

Any reason why you want that over the newer VR version?
I guess ebay or scouring the 2nd hand depts of the main shops are your best bet.
 
two reasons.
1. it should be cheaper than the current version
2. I have a d90 so dont need the motor
 
If its hard to find and rare, then possibly it wont be cheaper?

There have been a few on the forums recently, and the Non VR AF-S version crops up for not much money.
The AF-S is a bonus weather you need it or not, as its a bit qieter and faster than the AF-D

i bought the old one after reading several revues
you dont use the vr close up or am i wrong?
 
No the VR is only used at long distances, some say it actually reduces quality when its used at close distances.

I would post on the sale/ wanted forum but am not clear what I need to have achieved to be able to post

so no enhancement to the lens for macro
if the glass is as good go for the D?

You can buy now, but not sell or ask for wanted until 100 posts
 
Mifsuds have one listed, they also have a vr listed for a bit more aswell
 
The non vr is £429 and the vr is £499 so not a lot of difference.

I think I will try and source one from the States as it maybe cheaper

Doesn't always work out cheaper by the time you take into consideration VAT import duty and then the charge from who ever is the shipping agent.
