Hi Guys,

have a friend who is just getting into photography and going down the Nikon route.

He's looking for a decent macro (1:1) - anything you can recommend in either Nikon or third party?

Think he has a D300 and not sure of his budget, but think funds will be limited.

thanks in advance...

All depends what he is going to be shooting...for insects etc I would say a 90mm is the minimum ideally and something like the sigma 150mm would suit even better..if its product shots or flowers etc then the longer focal length wont be as crucial..

The Tamron certainly has a good reputation if you are on a budget. The Sigma however is around the same price as the Nikon. Both 105, 2.8 and image stabilized. So Tamron 90mm on the cheap, forget the Sigma and go for the Nikon if you got about 600 quid to spend :-)

Thanks guys,

will pass it on - didn't give a thought to VR, but probably over his budget.

nikor 105mm micro d or vr version (around 350-500 used)
tamron 90mm
sigma 105mm
sigma 150mm

Mostly around the 300-500 ukp. I think they are all 1:1 ratio though. If its insects like dragon flies, go for the 150mm as you wont need to be as close.

Also add some tubes (either the cheap tenner ones or kenko..? - around 100ukp?)

Links for the 105mm pics in the sig - either with all the tubes or on its own.

:)

More than happy with my 90mm.

@ ecniv,

thanks for links, will give him a better idea of what to look for

I've got a sigma 150mm with my D300 and it works great as others have said the Tamron has great reviews. The Sigma allows you to have a bit more space between you and your subject which depending on what the subject is can be useful.
This was taken handheld with the Sigma with Kenco extension tubes the spiders were about a day old and were only about 1mm in size
