Following my thread on my newly purchased D300s having 20 shots on the shutter before taking my first photo, I recalled having a few plays with live view mode but not actually taking a photo.

In the past few days I've been mindlessly playing with live view, on off a few hundred times in a AF fine tune experiment I was conducting...but not actually taking pictures with it, just zooming in using the + buttons.

Imagine my horror when viewing the shutter count today, when only having taken 400 ish shots with the camera according to the file names, the actuations show up as...950!

After a quick test the exif revealed for every activation in live view, the camera would add one actuation, and for every shot taken, it would also add a shot (which would explain the double clack of any live view photo), so taking even one photo in live view would always add 2 shots to the count!

If I hadn't realised this and gone live view crazy I'm sure my D300s would be worth next to nothing now on the used market. Just something to consider!

If it counts shutter activations then you are activating the shutter to expose the sensor for live viewing. Beats me why people worry about such things. you buy a camera to use it not sell on.

Thats because to get live view the mirror has to flip up so the sensor can see...

Same mechanical wear and tear.

However, too many are hung up on "shutter counts", just bloody use the expensive piece of stuff you bought. Its not an ornament or a collectible!

I wouldn't worry about it, get using it, you may as well enjoy the security of having a warranty for the first year.

For what its worth i probably take more than 20 photos of the floor everytime i walk anywhere with my cameras, Bloody things are always going off.

I'm not hung up about shutter counts, far from it. I take every shot I need to. The point is I wouldn't pointlessly put the camera into burst mode and fire away at a blank wall just for the hell of it, and I doubt anyone else would either! It's just if I had realised what was going on then I wouldn't have done it!

If it makes you feel any better my D300s has 3k shots and is 3 weeks old.

Give the guy a break fellas - he's just sharing info. Something I never knew nor ever considered.

Not that I ever use live view - but it's interesting to know. Cheers kanine

Yeah it is indeed interesting and a little odd that they count this as the shutter opens just once for the amount of shots that are taken, I use it a lot on my microscopes to reduce vibrations and I'll often take > 1000 shots in a sitting for stacking. I'd thought that this wouldn't have added to the actuation count as there were no shutter actuations as such.

Not that i care how many actuations my cameras have, I use them as much as I need to , when they wear out i get a new one (if only that was true says my bank manager)

No problem!

I never used to use live view - until a few days ago I discovered possibly the most significant discovery I've made since using the AF-ON button...

Contrast detect/live view autofocus is THE MOST accurate way to focus compared to phase/viewfinder autofocussing.

I thought I might have a ever so slightly soft 85 1.4 ... and played for hours with AF fine tune. It's spot on in the centre, but on the far extreme edge focus points, it would be a little fuzzy. Fair enough I thought, edge sharpness might not be great.

WRONG. With contrast detect in live view, this lens is RAZOR sharp all over the frame. I was so amazed that I started playing with all my other lenses that I thought were a little soft wide open - 50 1.4, 18-50 2.8 ....these lenses were now razor sharp whenever I focussed, EVERY time!

Pity the contrast focus is SO slow! But if it means nailing focussing wide open with 1.4 primes every time, I might just live with slow focus!
