I am thinking of buying a new lens for my Nikon on my birthday. But im not sure which one to get.

Any ideas considering my birthday is in about 2 months?

Cheers in advance

What sort of photography are you into? Will help us recommend different lenses.

and a budget.

I often like to give a different point of view, so I'd counter that if you need to ask us (and we don't know you, or what you shoot) then you don't need a new lens at all.

Personally I'd take a holiday somewhere nice, and take pictures (if you fancy) with what you've got.

I'd counter counter, by saying he might only have the body and not yet bought a lens.:)

profile says 18-55

200-400 VR...I'd like that for my birthday :)

We do need an idea as to where the OP's interests lie! It would be silly for us to recommend a super wide angle if they want to shoot sport... An idea of budget would be a help too.

Well I am interested in most aspects of photography. Althought I urge more towards the landscape side of things.

Budget at the moment is in the £100 reigon. I know theres not many lenses for that price that are decent.

But thanks for all the comments and suggestion-esques if you would call it that ??

Well I am only 15 so I have no job at the moment. And I havnt really got the money.

In that case my suggestion to you is the same one I've given everyone else who asked a similar question this week - get a Nikon 55-200 VR. It is a decent wee lens, designed to compliment the 18-55 kit lens and can be had for about £125-140 NEW. For the money you'll not get anything much better...

Cheers Flash in the Pan.

I will invest in that lens quite soon.

Thanks again to all those who have helped in any way even if they didnt suggest a lens =]

As above but slightly different. Jolsterj is suggesting the 50mm f1.8, whereas I have the 50mm f1.4. I paid around £160 new through an eBay shop. Had it a year now and still absolutely cracking. This lens produces stupidly sharp images!

I'll chime in with a Sigma 70-300mm APO - stunning lens for the price (sub-£100 if you look hard enough)

My advice would be buy 2nd hand - you'll get more lens for your money.

What about the 'nifty fifty'

cracking lens for about 70 pounds

Not exactly a landscape lens and it duplicates the focal length the op already has in the 18-55.

I'll await the Nifty Owners Club assualt with their chants of "bargain" "prime" and all such nonsense  :boxer:

I tend to agree, I'm not fond of 50mm as a focal length on cropped bodies.

Don't get me wrong - its a nice lens, but if you are doing landscape you are stopped down to f/11 and then you be sharp with any lens, if anything you'll worry about diffraction.

Its a cheap lens, but actually these get sold on often (in Canon and Nikon fit), so while its a "bargain" - its only a bargain if the lens is used.

Exactly, I've spoken to quite a few people who have been suckered in by the hype and then discovered that it's not really of any use to them.

Come to think of it, I've hardly ever used mine....I can see another sale coming up

Gotta admit that I bought the 50mm, I hardly use it since I got a 35mm F2.

Could be another for sale soon..........:D

It's funny, lots of people don't like 50mm on crop body, but I find 35mm too wide, and 85mm a bit too long - 50mm is just right for me :D.

I really like my 35/2 on DX, I think I "see" well at about 50mm FoV (on crop) so I'd quite like to try a 50mm on the D700 to see how I do.
