Nikon Lenses (to match D700)

Morning!

Following on from an earlier post i made regarding possible getting the D700 cheap via a combonation of Duty free Prices and funding via family for Xmas (i'd end up paying £1100 :)), i was wondering what the equivelant lenses would be to what i use at present.

At the moment i use the 12-60mm SWD (24-120mm in 35mm terms), and the 50-200mm SWD (100 - 400mm in 35mm terms)

Now these can be used wide open with no problem and are sharp across the frame, right into the corners. Now i know there will be a difference in the DOF between Oly & Nikon, but i like my lenses to be sharp wide open - otherwise why buy 2.8 glass.

If i did go for the D700 i would probably be looking at the 24-70mm, but dont know much about Nikon Glass (Being an Oly person, why whould i :) ), so what are the options for Telephoto? Ive heard that the 70-200mm is a little soft wide open and not too good in the corners?

No,thats rubbish. Its sharp wide open in the center, and the corners ARE soft at 200mm on full frame (not DX) for portraits this is fine anyhow, and for landscape, well you won't be shooting them wide open anyway.

In other words the "softness" reports are not going to be noticed by anyone unless you go looking for problems IMHO.

The 24-70 is excellent, also consider the Tamron 28-75 or the new Sigma 24-70 HSM.

Thanks - Just what i wanted to hear :)

I thought the Sigma 24-70 was an oldish lens or is this an updated version?
 
There is a new version of the Sigma 24-70 HSM coming out very soon (December-ish)

I think the lens will be well worth a look.

Will have a look on the WWW about that one, and will be a lot cheaper than the Nikon 24-70mm

Now, Next Question....

50mm or 85mm Prime?

On full frame, I'd be looking at a 50mm.

But - I'm going to suggest you wait for a lens that isn't out yet (but December :lol:), the new Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 AF-S.

What a price :thumbs:. Do you mind if I ask, was that a new one, or 2nd hand? If new, would you mind telling me where you got it.

Very good, didn't really shoot much with it on the D700 though, because I tend to like to have wide angles or short zooms.

I found f/2.8 just a little less contrasty, f/3.2 sorted that out, and the corner sharpness was fine.

Used (which is fine by me) but its less than 6 weeks old.

Yeah, pretty good, there was supposed to be a UK price drop, but we got Capture NX :gag: instead over here (worth £180 :lol::lol::lol:), I'm still expecting it to be £1499 very very soon, but I can't see it dropping much more than that for a while.

"D3X" is going to be a brick, will wait for the D800 for a high megapixel Nikon.
 
The 70-200 Nikon vr is sharp as a pin throughout really sweet lens. Other than that i would strongly recommend the Nikon 17-35 2.8, Nikon 24-70 2.8 and the Nikon 14-24 2.8.

The jump in money is considerable between 3rd party brands and Nikon lenses, but in terms of quality they cannot be compared, Nikon provide sharper, fast focusing and considerably better build quality than 3rd party contenders. Especially in terms of the lenses listed above. The Sigma 24-70 definitely ain't as good as the Nikon equivalent

You have just got a great camera don't go skimping on glass!

Agreed about the 70-200, it is a great lens on the FF bodies, although you can find problem at the edges if you really look but on the whole it performs exceptionally well.
 
I've got the Nikon 24-70 2.8 and you really have to give this lens a go. It's fantastic. I just need to balance it on a heavier body (I'm using a D90 at the moment)!!!

when i brought mine a couple of months ago nikon had adjusted the new batches so as to have no vignetting wide open at 70mm on FF cameras

No they didn't.

There are no variants of the 70-200 VR. You can't "adjust" vignetting away, its a physical characteristic.

You probably just have vignetting control enabled in-camera.

Sounds like you have a very imaginative lens salesman though ;)
 
I have the 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200 and all three work perfectly and are ideal lenses for the D700. I use the 24-70 then the 70-200 then the 14-24 (it really is VERY wide on an FX camera).
 
Its worth pointing out that because the D700 is essentially a low resolution (in pixel density terms) camera its very tolerant of glass.

I have a old Nikkor 28-200 AF-G (I always loved this lens on the D70!) and its very good from 28mm right out to 200mm.

So you don't *need* to get the Holy Trinity of glass (obviously Nikon's bean counters would rather you did...)

When the "D3X" comes out buying the latest Nikkors will make more sense than it does now.
