Hi

I got my self, well the wife bought me a D5100, did not have any kit lens left. So bought a 18-200, but want a 18-55 or I think I do. But not sure what to buy, I'm new to this and would just buy a 18-55 kit lens. But as I'm on here I would like advise on what to get, I'm willing to spend £100-£200.

Can you also state why you are advising on the lens, then I may learn some thing.

You got the Nikon D5100 body only and then bought the 18-200 Nikon lens i take it? but now you want the 18-55 kit lens?

If i was you don't bother with the 18-55 kit lens ...... since the Nikon 18-200 is much better in my opinion. The 18-55 will be no use to you since the 18-200 cover most of the focal length.

With £100-200 i would suggest looking into buying the Nikon 35mm f1.8G AF-S DX

The 35mm prime will give you better optic, small, light and very good at low light situation as well. Is a f1.8 lens so can you that depth of field.

The 18-200 covers the same range plus a lot more at the long end, and is said to be a pretty good lens for one with such a range, so I cannot see what you would gain by getting the 18-55.

If you are looking for something smaller, or better image quality then there are options available to you.

Personally I would get a prime lens, the 35mm f1.8 or a 50mm f1.8, both nice fast lenses that will allow some artistic background blur / subject isolation, and the ability to shoot in poor light.

Don't no the exact laters and numbers but is 18-200 and a sigma.

I bought the sigma as this was the only one I could get, the smaller ones was all sold unless I was paying £300 plus quid.

I did not no that the one I got covers the 18-55, can you gave me a link please to what you recommend.

Lots of letters numbers and had a quick look and vary lots in price.

This is the 35mm f1.8, which is a fixed focal length lens rather than a zoom LINK

Or there is the 50mm f1.8 also a fixed focal length LINK

To see the difference in focal length, set your 18-200 at 35mm and 50mm and fire off some shots, this will show you what field of view either lens will give you.

Whilst you will be limited by a fixed focal length, the image quality will be far better than your zoom, unless you spend a fair bit more than your budget you are going to struggle to improve on what you have with a zoom lens

So focal means fixed zoom no in or out, so i would have to move closer to the subject. Sounds like I bought a lens that covers the kit lens, with out knowing. As I'm not the best and all new, would I benefit from a smaller lens. I would take pics close but unsure how close 18 is or would 18 mean 18 inch so this is as close as you can get to a subject.

The number 18 - 200 is the focal length of the lens in millimetres.

18mm is a wide angle, whilst 200mm is a telephoto.

If you look through the camera with the lens fitted, at 18mm you will get a lot of the scene in the frame, as you zoom out to 200mm you will get less and less in frame.

Every lens has a minimum focusing distance, this tells you how close you can actually get to the subject and still get focus.

The 35mm f1.8 is quite good in this respect, it has a minimum focus distance of around 250mm.
 
I always find this quite handy.

The AF-S bit is important, these have the motor in the lens and will allow autofocus with your camera body :thumbs:

Would just like to thank badboy1984 and Martyn, i bought a Nikon 50mm f1.8 G AF-S Lens and i like it.
