Yes
My current kit is a D7100, a Nikon 18-70mm & a Sigma 70-200mm EX DSG HSM with 1.4 TC.

I predominantly use the 70-200 & 1.4 combo when shooting motorsport and aircraft but I'm finding myself wanting a little more reach & IQ. I know I can make some quite heavy crops with my sensor but i'd prefer not to have to for very close up shot that I want.

I was thinking about selling my Sigma 1.4 TC, and going down the route of a Nikon 300mm F4 paired with a Nikon 1.4 TC. That way, I can keep my 70-200 and it's 2.8 aperture for outdoor shots of the kids etc

Or would selling my Sigma 70-200 & 1.4 TC and moving onto the older Nikon 80-400 VR be a better idea? But then I'm losing the 2.8 aperture...

I've only just started looking but I know exactly what you mean.

I'd either be looking at the non VR 300mm F4 or the older 80-400 as the new version's are definitely out of my price range

I think i've just answered my own question and am leaning towards the 300mm F4

The older 300mm f4 can be had for a very good price now since the newer VR one came out, still a cracking lens too, i use on with a 1.4x TC to shoot wildlife, i have done the odd Airshow too last year

I shouldn't think you would be needing VR too much anyway, i very rarely do for wildlife as i keep the shutter speed pretty high

Thanks, I've been looking at HDEW and a new 300mm F4 can be had for £699

I'm looking at the 300mm f4 pf. As per my other post, there has apparently been some serious issues with the VR. Until I can be sure they are solved, I'm holding off. Just thought I'd mention in case you guys had missed the info from Nikon. Unsurprisingly, they aren't exactly shouting about it.

That's exactly where i bought mine from actually, great price and had no issues with mine thus far

Great...

Any thoughts on a Kenko 1.4 TC as they're a little more affordable than the Nikon variants? Reading around on the net, they do get favourable reviews.

I can only go on the Nikon one i havem be warned though that the latest Nikon 1.4x Version 3 won't work with the older 300mm f4, you need either a version 1 or 2

I'd advise avoiding the older 80-400mm lens as the autofocus is not the quickest and most likely won't be up to motorsport or wildlife capabilities. The 300mm f4 is a cracking lens so that would be the way I'd go and hang onto your 70-200.

Yep, this is the route I'm going to go. Thanks everybody....

My Kenko 1.4 was poor on my D7100 & 300mm AFS f4 lens. When I looked on the kenko site it states that you may need to MF if the light was low etc.......which I found was the case with mine. @u8myufo also had one on his D750 and also found the Kenko poor, I believe he is using the Nikon version Mk2 now and is impressed.
