Hi,

I fancy buying a broken lens and taking it to bits. Maybe, just maybe, I can fix it :)

I emailed the spare-parts department at nikon and they refused to sell any internal components :'( The same with fixationuk...

So, is there anywhere I can buy lens parts? Maybe buy abroad, from US?

Thanks,
Matt

You can get them in this country. A frriend of mine repaired his 18-55 with bits from ebay. I recall they had lots of bits for cameras and lenses, but cant remember the name of the seller.

The other possibility is to buy one or two more broken ones and cannibalise them to build one working lens. Might be worth it, providing you don't have to pay too much for them, and you're ready to take the risk that the same part(s) aren't broken in all of them!

Just be careful if buying your broken lenses on ebay as for some reason there are people on there who are quite happy to pay an awful lot of money for a lens that has been dropped from a cliff onto a rock, bounced into the sea, rescued three years later and dried out with a blow torch.

I had a similar idea to this, just wanted to take a lens apart out of curiosity. Have watched loads of basket cases sell for top money on ebay and still haven't found anything to buy. I'm sure it was only a few weeks ago that I was watching a 70-200 that had been dropped. It had broken into three, though one portion was missing all together. Everything had seized and the front element was heavily scraped, maybe even cracked. It sold for over £600 when good ones go for £900. Madness!

...for your replies.

It was a 17-35mm Nikon lens on fleaBay that got me interested. Water damage, rust, cracked but still went for £240.

I tried sites like alibaba and google, but I will need things like SWM motors and pcb-boards.

Looks like I would have to find two broken lenses and combine the best bits (might take a while if its a 17-35 :sulk:).
