Been into town this morning and Jessops are doing the Nikon 24-70mm2.8 for £1,199.It seems like a very good price for what I understand is one of the best Nikon lenses.It has now given me an urge to buy my first fast lens.
If I did take the plunge with what type of photos would I gain most benefit?
Potrait,landscape,buildings or any other.
I think I just need convincing that I should spend that much money on a lens.Look forward to reading your advice.
 
You don't spend that much money on a lens - unless you need it - if you don't know what you are going to use it for - you don't need it! There, just saved you £1200!
 
It is a fantastic lens and mine might as well be welded onto my camera.

What do you normally take photo's of since this might help youmake your mind up. EG, If you mainly do macro's, sport or wildlife, then the 24-70 will be staying in your bag.
 
As Andrew says if you are not sure what you will use it for or what it is aimed at, then do you need it?

I will say this was the best walk about lens i ever owned and if you decide you are getting one you will be glad you did.
 
agree with andrew and tony, and regarding walkabout these aren't the lightest lenses you'll come across, my 17-55 is heavy and this is even bigger

The same thought crossed my mind.But I like to vary my photography.I am still new to DSLRs so I take all types of photos.Perhaps one day I will decide to specialise.The point of my question was to determine what are the strengths of the 24-70 to see if I can justify spending that kind of money.
Also it is time I had a fast lens.Perhaps I should settle for a 50mm1.4.

a 50mm 1.4 - even an 85mm 1.4 would be a lot cheaper - and faster - but without the advantage of the zoom. The 24-70mm is my most use lens for press work.
 
Don't go there, it's a very slipperly slope...
 
Its been welded to my camera for 6 months or so, If i didnt have a 70-200 on its way i would say it would be welded on for the next 6 months.

The above advice is all true, but you can seriously get inspiration to get out and take photos of anything with a new toy. If thats what you need, you wont be disappointed.
Its strength are just about everything, its only weakness is not wanting to take it off to use another lens that might be more suitable for another shot.
Great for close portraits and walkabout if your happy with the weight.

The cure for that 'problem' of course is buy another body! :D
 
I have just purchased the 24-70 and it's a fantastic lens ..but heavy I have just purchased a 50mm f1.4 and it is tack sharp and fast also light I suggest you try this lens first! you will not go wrong ...also the Tamron 28-75 is an excellent lens and cheap
 
If your main camera is the D300, then maybe a 17-55mm Nikkor or 17-50 Tamron would be a. less expensive and b. a more useful range. I found my 24-70 on DX to be great but usually wanted wider for walking about, general stuff. Great for portraits on DX, but not as good as an 85mm 1.8 for example.

I think you've answered your own question. When you know what you want to do with it then its worth spending big money on the right lends, but learn what suits you first
