Hi

Now I have my 150-600, I want to change my 18-300 to a better walkabout lens. I've narrowed down to the following

Nikon 16-85
Nikon 16-80
Nikon 17-55
Sigma 17-70
Tamron 17-50

The 16-80 is brand new and high priced but I'm tempted by a fixed 2.8 lens. 17-55s can be had second hand very reasonably but they are a tank. I've no experience of the Sigma or Tamron though. Any thoughts?

I bought a Tammy 17-50 on the forum here. Not used it much but it seems very good indeed.
Had the Siggy 17-70 when I shot Canon, loved it although I had nothing to compare it with.

I only have experience of the Nikon 16-85mm lens but I consider it the best for size, weight, quality and cost. I like it so much I've had two (one got stolen :()

I was considering the Nikon 16-80mm lens as an upgrade but for me they have way overpriced it, :( and I doubt it will come down that much. The other lenses may have wider apertures, but shallow depth of field is not a huge part of what I take pics of, and in very low light I'm usually on a tripod. I have a camera that is way better than what I had before with regards high ISO performance, so hand held in fading light is not so much of a problem as it used to be occasionally.

The 16-85mm has a good overlap with my 70-300mm which results in less need to use that lens as often. I think with the shorter range of the Nikon 17-55, Sigma 17-70 and the Tamron 17-50 I would be changing lenses more often, and lose a bit wider end, which is where I find I want extra the most. Those lenses are bigger and heavier I think too.

I think you just have to choose what aspects are important to you as I have done for myself. Cost, size, weight, zoom range, wide apertures, stabilisation, image quality? For me it is the 16-85mm, for others....

Decided on a 17-55 f2.8. It'll hold its value so I can always sell on. Eventually I'll probably have to grab a 70-200.
