Morning All
At the moment I have the Nikon 18x105 but would like to know how much better the Nikon 16x85 is and whether it would be worth upgrading.
Many thanks
Gary

Hi. 'Kit' lenses are OK but are obviously made to a price. You'll loose your higher end but, on the plus side, your getting a useful 24mm. From what I remember of the lens it was really good. Even better, but a lot dearer is the 17-55m f2.8 which is stunning.

I agree not much in it.

Thanks for the help and advice. Think I will start saving for either 17x55 f2.8 or the 24x70 f2.8

Don't discount ghe 17-50 Tamron it's a super lens if you get a good copy.

The Tamron 17-50 2.8 Di II with VC is an awesome lens and for less than £400 it's the perfect upgrade to the 'kit' lens if you can afford a 17-55 or a 24-70 2.8 :)

24-70 is better suited to FF so i wouldn't recommend that unless you plan to go FF soon. I have a Tamron 17-50 too which is great but you will lose a lot of reach that you will miss.

Two votes for the Nikon 17x55. Looks like I will be saving up for that one.
Thanks again all.

I've got both the Nikkor 18-70 which can be picked up secondhand for about £100 and the 16-85 both very nice lenses.

Gary, again....can you offer any more specifics, the 18-105 isn't a soft lens when used correctly.
You really need to stop assuming that people are not using there low cost lenses correctly because they want something sharper. We all know about your magic 18-55 and 55-200 that are as sharp as everything other than pro lenses, it's offensive.

Happy to step out of this one, didn't realise I was saying anything offensive!

I don't think you were, this time....

Just nonsense as usual, perhaps it would be better if you kept your less than sage like advice to yourself.

Just like to add, used both the 16-85mm and the 17-55 Nikon I like both of them, but i do Perfer the larger apeture on the 17-55 :)

Hi Phil
I suppose the main reason is that I have bought a Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II and thought (whether I am wrong or right ) when I use the other lens they are not going to look as good. Also guys lets be friendly to each other I only went for a quick bath before having my tea in a min.

So Phil offers perfectly sound advice only to be shot down by 2 newcomers. It's the norm on this, and every other adult forum, to thank someone when they take the time to help or am I missing something?

I'm getting used to this mate don't worry. Seems a bit of a vendetta is out for my head atm...

It'll blow over.

But yes. It is rather rude.

People (lens snobs ) will shoot me down for this but nevermind...

The 70-200mm is obviously an amazing lens and you can get a higher proportion of good shots in worse conditions...

But depending on the shooting conditions you may or may not need it and just bedside its one of nikons best, doesn't mean you neccesarily NEED to be that extreme.

You can get perfectly sharp shots with your lens but the lighting will have to be on your side.

If you're shooting wide open with that lens then its not fantastic by any means, but what are you shooting, when are you shooting it and what are your lighting conditions, most important, what budget ?
Its really quite unfair to offer any advice without knowing all the variables.

Those questions aren't really pbotography exclusive, its simple problem solving. Before a solution is offered, the benefits of that solution should meet your requirements.

Unless you need the better build quality of the Nikon then the Tamron 17-50 is almost its match optically, for a lot less money...,

Thanks for your help and advice Phil. Every persons help and advice is much appreciated that's why I joined the forum and if it stops me spending even better. :D

Ok I will rephrase it to read "relatively inactive" but either way your response to someone trying to help was uncalled for.

Andy

I visit the forum every couple of days but only post when I feel I have something that is worth while saying. I don't regard this as being inactive.

My comments directed towards Phil related to the previous incorrect advice he has given. As for being rude, Phil is hardly exempt from this and unlike him I did not degenerate into childish name calling, the way he did yesterday.

While I appreciate that you and him may be pals and of course you would want to fight his corner so to speak. One of the comments made by him yesterday was especially distasteful and was certainly not something that I would normally expect to see on this forum.

Lol forum troll?!

Haha. You sound like you're being bullied - get over it jeeze .

"Poor soul"??? Come on you are being a bit special now...

OK mate I'll leave this one to people that know everything about everything...I'll step down as my job as a forum troller just for this thread! ;)

As someone who has a disabled family member I find this sort of language disgusting.

So let me get this straight...your beef with me is because I said someone was being special and you take that offensive because you have someone in your family with a disability?

And a picture think I was calling someone disabled?

I don't know you, I don't know your family but it sounds like you are just a little bit too sensative about your family. Perhaps you should open your eyes and see that not every comment is directed at people not as able as you or even in the context you assume it to be.

Over the last 2 days you have shown nothing but grudge towards me, I didn't start it but I'm not one to back down once trouble comes to me.

I'm not horrible to anybody without it being deserved. You have tried to make me look like a fool and its easy to do that in front of a computer. I don't really care what people think because I come in here to help and get help. Its members like you that need to go and sort out your act.

Your getting over excited again and before this degenerates into more childish insults from you I will give this a miss. Lets be honest about it Phil, I did not purposely set out to make a fool out of you. I replied in a more than congenial way to a post you had made giving incorrect advice and explained that I had also seen other examples of you giving other incorrect advice and suggested that if you were unsure about something not to comment so as not to confuse the forum newbies.

You reacted to that and if anyone made a fool out of you it was yourself. I won't be making any further comments about your advice incorrect or otherwise as you are not the sort of person I would like to have any further involvement with.

I only know Phil through the forum and was not privy to previous threads. I have never had any problems with his comments.

If you have a problem with another member then use the facilities to involve the mods because your behaviour and attitude today are totally uncalled for as Phil only offered his advice.

All I, and others, have seen are yours and the other chaps childish comments which are totally out of context with the rest of this thread.
