Nikon Kit Lens Not Focusing

My lens (18-55mm) recently took a tumble :'( Ever since it's stopped focusing every now and then. It's been sat in my bag attached to my camera for a while. Went to use it today and it wouldn't focus at all!! Took it off the body, wiped the terminals, put it back on and it worked again. Is there anywhere I can get it serviced/repaired or am I better off finding myself a new/used lens?
 
I tried flicking it into MF from AF and back into AF and it still wouldn't work. Took it off the body, gave the terminals a wipe and it worked ok! Other times I have to flick to MF from AF and back to AF for it to decide to work.
 
I've had that before - annoying because it's so out-of-the-blue but at least you're back up and running :)

It maybe that the baseplate around the AF/MF switch has moved slightly. This happened to my 55-200mm lens the other day I thought I had broken it but that part was about 2mm out I simply clicked the surround back into place. It sound a small fix but it obviously affects the switches alot as before I sorted it my lens was stuck in AF mode and would not let me manually move the focus ring even if placed in MF!. Here is the part I am talking about make sure the screw is nice and tight aswell :)

It does sound like it is just some 'corrosion' on the contacts if it's been laying around for a while. A good cleaning of the contacts should keep it going.

You know the answer...... you need to get out and use it more often!
 
The fact that it has 'taken a tumble' would suggest to me it's more than corrosion on the contacts. Ultimately any repair is going to far exceec the value of the lens, so if it has packed in the only thing to do is buy another one....

I agree with this, I think camera repair labour is around £40-60 an hour, and you can pick up the ED-II kits lens used on here for around £60ish, or the VR version for an additional £15-20 or so. Could always flog your faulty one on ebay as spares or repairs to try and recoup some of the replacement cost?

Thats good news that you've got it working again.

If it does pack up fully, I think the tumble it suffered, may well have caused some damage inside and it's probably not worth a repair due to the costs. I would buy a new one and has been suggessted, sell on as a broken or intermittant lens...

Hopefully, it doesn't fail again
