What would be the best program for a complete novice to opt for to edit images from a Nikon DSLR? The cheaper the better

Gimp or Paint.net, both free. If you want want splash a bit of cash then take a look, NX2 or PS Elements 8, both of which can be downloaded on a trial basis.
