I am a Canon user with 3 bodies and a bunch of Lenses - must admit that seeing the High ISO capabilities of these Nikons does get me rather jealous
there does not seem to be a thread dedicated to High ISO Low light
so please Nikon users please post your high ISO images and make me 'drool' some more
regards
Chris

here's a theatre portrait at 6400 ISO - EXIF intact

No noise reduction on that one! Just 'normal' processing in LR.

here's another - different sort of image - still 6400 ISO - not a lot of available light here!

I dont really have any real world examples that havent been through noise reduction, But here are two images I did for comparison a few years ago

Nikon D700 ISO 3200 1/50 f/3.2

reindeeriso3200.jpg

Nikon D200 ISO 3200 1/80 f/3.2 (had it in A mode hence the shutter discrepancy duh!)

seeing these shots at 6400 takes some taking in with so little noise.. Canon really need to be getting there act together in this department
with my 3 camera's I can 'just' live with ISO 1600 on my 1dmk2N and 40D but I shot along side a female photog using a D3 at an indoor Tennis match and I was totally bowled over with the shutter speeds she was getting
hence this thread - there is not a dedicated Nikon Low Light thread so hopefully this will spur you Nikon guys to post some
Thanks for getting things rolling Andrew

one more - from the fabulous 4 megapixel D2Hs @1250 ISO

Before you slate canon have you tried 5DMkII, 1DsmkIII (same sensor) or the new 1DmkIV? even 1D mkIII doesn't look too shabby at ISO3200 (no samples available on work M$ PC)

why oh why did you have to post that................

Im trying not to make a huge leap into getting a D3s, last night I convinced myself a D7000 would be ok for the next 18 months, then upgrade to a D3s and use the D7k as a second. My wife may end up killing me ......... :gag:

Seeing the above also makes me want a D3s. Fantastic quality images! Really fantastic.

I don't think anyone can dispute the fantastic low light/high ISO performance of Nikon full frame. It's been nice to appreciate the examples so far.

D3s is unreal.

I just wish the 50mm and 85mm 1.4's had VR so I could shoot handheld still life/landscapes at 1/20th and suchlike, 1.4, ISO10,000... Be more or less night vision. White cards mandatory.

1) 4000 ISO

2) 3600 ISO

3) 3200 ISO

With practice and good technique you should manage 1/20th with these lenses.

That's a valid point. The OP is comparing his OLD cameras (the 1D Mk 2N was released in 2005, for heavens' sake!) with NEWER Nikon cameras.

Canon has got their act together since then - spurred by Nikon, to be sure, who changed the rules of the game when they introduced the D3. But the OP simply hasn't upgraded to take advantage of it.

Would be interested to see the other settings (shutter speed etc) as well as ISO on these photos please....

John, you should be able to see all the settings in my pictures - the EXIF is there.

ISO 3200. Nikon D700. No NR either in camera or in PP.

I wasn't able to view the EXIF data until i added Exif Viewer for firefox, probably missed something easier but have it sorted now.

Just messing around to see what noise is like on my D90 at hight ISO. This is a bit dark (dark day here) used no lights

ISO 2500 F5.3 1/350 Sec

Testing my Nikon D90 at Hi-1 (ISO6400)

Nikon 50mm 1.8D @ F2 1/60 no flash

Only had a lamp with candle bulb and the TV for lighting.

Prints very well at A4.

Good to see my D90 can go that High. Might give me some more confidence to ramp it up in the future.

Unfortunately, my six-year-old D2x doesn't reach the heady heights of the modern Nikons but here's ISO 1600 (Hi1) just for reference.... actually doesn't look too bad in comparison :)

look great - at web sizes and in print you hardly notice noise at all.

AWP - rarely use it that high - exposure has to be spot on otherwise it gets messy in the shadows. Otherwise it's the perfect camera.... ISO 800 is used regularly with no quibbles.

Just wish Nikon had continued with a gripped pro body with a DX sensor to complement the D3 range (a'la Canon with its FF and 1.3x crop bodies)...
