Hi,

Im pretty new to photography and currently have a Nikon D60 and have just bought a 50mm/f1.8. Now with my limited knowledge i didnt know the lens would not autofocus.

So i was going to look to sell the D60 and but a similar Nikon camera with the built in motor.

What Nikon's have this? i was told the D70, D70s would be a similar camera to the D60 but have the built in motor.

If so were would be the best place to pick up a second hand one?

Any help appreciated.

Regards

If you're happy with the D60, why not save a few pennies, sell the 50 you have and get the 50/1.4 AFS? Can be had for £269.

You should be able to get £75 at least for the 50 you have, so that's £200ish - less if you can find a second hand one.

A D50 would be closer in size to the D60 than the D70(s). One difference you'll notice though is that they are all "just" 6MP cameras rather than the 10.2 of the D60 (although you can get good A3 prints from the D70).

Look in the For Sale board here for a start, then look at places like Mifsuds, Ffordes and others (have a look at the ads in the back of Amateur Photographer for more names). You'll pay more from a dealer but most give a warranty of some kind on 2nd hand kit.

Of course, another option could be to accelerate the upgrade path and (if you can afford to) trade the D60 in against a D90.

Alterntively learn to use manual focus. We all had to do that when i was young.

why not a 35mm AF-S DX - lots cheaper about £130 used here...but having said that ... why not manual focus anyway .....good learning curve...

i have recently tried to use manual focus and im slowly getting the hang of it but i still lose quite a few shots so wanted to try to eliminate this by using AF.

would the 35mm AF-S DX be as sharp as the 50mm? (as i say im not too clued up on photography and still on a steep learning curve)

should be and it'll be a more natural focal length on the crop sensor, however that said getting a body with motor is rarely a bad thing, but i'd go for the 35mm if you can't afford a worthy upgrade in terms of body :)

i might take a look at the 35mm then, just had a quick look on Ebay and there around the £100 mark which suits me fine.

I recently upgraded from a D60 to a D90 and the step up is brilliant.

Before the upgrade however I had the same problem as you and decided on the 35mm 1.8, it is every bit as sharp as the 50mm and find it easier for indoor portraits where you cant walk back to get more in.

The following pics are from the Leeds xmas market and taken with my 35 @1.8 on my first trip out with it. Once you've nailed the shallow DoF you're sorted!

..
if you get adventurous and shop for used lens, "here" is a Nikon chart from Ken Rockwell (c) which shows the type of lens which will fit your D60

dont worry about having to buy the more expensive AF-S lens - which have the motor in the lens - IF you upgrade the body they will all work.

i started with the D40 - got all upset when i realize I had to buy AF-S --- then also realized --- so what ? - how MANY lens do i need anyway....

wide angle - maybe not cos the kit lens goes to 18mm - wait till I get a D90 !
a 35mm or 50mm prime
18 - 55mm AF-S kit lens
plus i bought a 55-200 AF-S *VR* here for a good price ........dont need any more ATM to get started......

im going to go for the 35mm i think, dont mind second hand tbh.

How do i put a post up in the "wanted" forum? it wont let me for some reason?

Thanks

I would also stick with the D60 - there is a manual focus indicator built in so you can still manual focus with non AF-S lenses and meter using the histogram. If you do want to upgrade I would skip on the D70 - I found that the lack of a full colour histogram (it only displays the green channel, possibly the least useful) a right royal pain. It means that you tend to underexpose and miss out on using all the available dynamic range of the camera. The D80 is a good option and the D90 is an excellent camera, albeit expensive in comparison.

I will probably go for the 35mm, but as i ant put a post up in the wanted section, where would be the best place to look? ive seen Ebay obviously but is there anywhere else worth looking?

you can get a NEW 35mm AF-S DX from One Stop Digital...."here"
for £180.......they ship from HK - but seem to have a good service record....

be very careful if ordering from "some" low cost UK stores. They take your order and money, and then ship from Hong Kong - still, no prob if you dont mind waiting weeks
BUT before you order from any on-line company it is well worth doing a Google search as in "Company XYZ complaints"..........

Ask Kerso on here too, if he stocks it, his price will take some beating.

I have to agree;keep the D60 & the 50mm prime.

You'll be surprised at how good the results can be with a bit of practice & experimentation! ;)

There are strict rules on the for sale/ wanted section. You will need to have 30 days and 100 posts in the bag before you can start a thread. Best not to go spamming posts to get your count up either as the Mods will just delete your spam post count. Go and have a look in the crit section and post a few replies, it doesn't take that much to get to the magic 100 posts

ok so ive gone and ordered the 35mm...

How much of a difference is there between the 35 and the 50mm?

Thanks
