Nikon guarantees.

I recently bought a new D300s, this came with a two year guarantee from Nikon.

Yesterday in the post I got a letter from Homeserve, and it looks as though the guarantees is through them. This is the same company that holds the guarantee on our washing machine.

No disrespect meant, but I wouldn't want the same engineer who was called out to our washing machine to be taking a "peek" inside my D300s.

I would have thought that anything that needed doing under guarantee would have been done by Nikon themselves, what kind of guarantee are Nikon offering?
 
In the D300 box (as with all Nikon bodies) is a bit of paper where its very clearly stated the 2nd year is serviced via Homeserve.

I don't see the point in making assumptions then starting a thread when you could have gone to Nikon.co.uk direct - its all there.

The extended two and three year warranties are managed on behalf of Nikon by Homeserve.

Easier to start a thread complaining about something you are getting for free though I guess..

I agree, there were no bits of paper that came with my D300 that mentioned Homeserve...I registered online and received acknowledgement that it was covered by NIKON 2yr guarantee, indeed it still shows this on 'my account"
 
My home insurance is held by Halifax, I wouldn't expect Howard from the adverts to come round and fix my washing machine though.

Just cos one company holds the paperwork doesn't mean they do the fixing.

As for the type of cover Nikon are offering, they sell the 2nd year to Homeserve for a certain rate and homeserve assume a percentage of claims to make a profit, I would assume they then pay Nikon an agreed rate to carry out any work.

Thanks for the replies guys, I was getting a bit worried that mine was the only box in the country that didn't have a bit of paper mentioning Homeserve.

Also good to hear Nick mention he feels the work is done by Nikon, makes me feel a bit more comfortable.
 
I bought a Nikon camera last year and the first years guarantee expired in March of this year. As you say the second year is covered by Homeserve.

Over the past 6 months Homeserve have sent 10 separate letters telling me that the warranty expires in March 2010 and I have to send them £90 (or there abouts) for the second year. I did phone them to complain and say that the second year is free and they admitted that indeed it was. However, that has not stopped them sending more letters asking for money for the second year.

I hope that I do not have to make a claim through Homserve as I would imagine that it will not be staight forward :thumbsdown:

That was one of my main concerns when I opened the guarantee and noticed the Homeserve connection. Having the washing machine with them, I know how "persistant" they can be.

When did Nikon move from warranting their own products for the 2nd year to a 3rd party? I got a 2nd year on the D200 and there's absolutely no mention of it being handled through a 3rd party. I also had no letters or such from any 3rd party :thinking:

Never had to use it in the 2nd year though...
