Afternoon all.

I'm off to California shortly and will be taking my d700 with me. I'll be taking my 24-70 and 70-200, but fancy a wideangle aswell.

Budget wise im looking at around 300, so obviously the pro level nikon wideangles are out. Has anyone used the Tokina 17-35 or 16-28? any other suggestions? I've heard the sigma 12-24 is soft most of the time.

Thanks

I use the 18-35 AF-D, can be picked up for around £200. I'm pretty happy with it, it's no pro lens but it's really cheap.

16-28 is very good, but not at £300 and not with a filter thread.

17-35mm is best left well alone. I've tried it and was not impressed at all. It's not £300 either.

How about a nikon 20mm prime? I would say Zeiss but that is more like £1300.

I used to have a Sigma 15-30mm when I had a D700 and I loved it (at that price point). AF a little slow and prone to flare but quite sharp and obviously pretty wide. Not sure how much but definitely well within your budget (used).

Yeah i've seen thh 20mm and 20-35mm from nikon. I didnt know about the 18-35D so i'll look into that. I quite like the idea of the prime for the size/weight factor more than anything. With the 24-70 and 70-200 (which im tempted to leave behind) i'll just end up carrying too much.

I've got the 20mm and it's a decent lens, very light also. Can be picked up cheap if you get lucky :)

:plusone:

That and an even cheaper 28-105 on a D700 and you're pretty much covered for a light, cheap, walkround/travel set up. IMO :)

I also had the 18-35 on my D700. Really liked it. Got some cracking shots with it. Can be a bargain secondhand.

14-24/f2.8 is the best FX wideangle if you can afford it.

16-35/f4 is good too.

Best prime is possibly Samyang 14/f2.8 for fraction of the price of the other two.

Sigma 20mm f1.8 is an excellent wide angle on a D700 and can be picked up for well under your budget. It's as sharp as my 24-70 nikon.
