Nikon FX body upgrade from D700

I like the D700 but want a change for two reasons. First is more MP and second is shutter noise. Its for all-round use and I need a good sized viewfinder for ease of use with eye glasses. Something a bit lighter would not go amiss (but not essential). I'd be buying second hand. D750 seems the obvious choice, but is there anything else I should consider?
 
If you're wanting to stay full frame Nikon (and not have the full size bodies of the D3/4/5), the only other ones to consider is the D800/e/810. I think the D600/610 would be too much of a downgrade from a D700.
 
I have both the D810 and D750 ........ I love both .... but the D750 just feels easier to use and unless you need 36MP the 20 odd the D750 has is enough - max SS on D750 is 1/4000th sec ...... if you need 1/8000th sec you will have to go D8xx

The D8xx is more like the D700 feel etc., than the D750 is .. it feels big and heavy whereas the D750 dose not

If you need more resolution, the 800's. If you need more fps the 3/4/5's.... For everything else, the D750.
 
There's the D500 if you're happy with crop body. Apparently more of a pro build than the D750, not that the D750 feels shabby though ;)

The D750 is significantly quieter than the D700 in practice, even more so in Quiet mode.

I use both side by side, the difference is huge.
 
:agree: I agree, loved my D750 apart from the noise, even in quiet mode for bird photography, one shot and off they would go. The D810 is a lot quieter compared to the three D750's I have owned.
 
I made the move from the 700 to the 810 and in the main I would say I have no regrets.

From what I noticed the 810 did bring up my poor holding of the camera compared to the 700, so more photos were unsharp due to small movements which the 700 let me get away with, if you don't have slightly larger slightly faster memory cards (CF in the main) then this is something to migrate to over time (moved from 32gb to 64gb, but the SD cards are cheap so can go to 128 and above with these) and storage space will used quicker on a computer.

Like I say apart from the above which I have worked around I have no real regrets in going for the 810.

The D750 is annoyingly loud, but in quiet continuous mine doesn't scare birds from as close as 8ft. I wonder why the D750 is so loud compared to others though? I used my mate's D7000 the other day and the shutter was much better/quieter.
 
If you love control style of your D700 (mode button, dedicated ISO/QUAL/WB, AF-ON, metering switch, mechanical flash release, round eyepiece with built-in shutter) then the D810 is the way to go.

If you have no preferences in this respect, then the D750 is a perfect camera for you.

I'm assuming that's after you've done with them as surely that'll slow workflow more otherwise as you're having to work on files via USB to another drive. Working from an SSD as your main hard drive would be much quicker I'd have thought, at least until LR has made previews. That's what I do anyway, and then once I've processed them I transfer the RAWs onto two external drives to store them should I need them again in the future. This way it stops my main hard drive filling up.

My nearest perch is approx 3.5meteres from the back door, where I usually set up my tripod and camera. Even with the door closed, but with the adjacent kitchen window slightly open, If one or two birds, one shot and they were off with the D750's I owned. ... I have had upto sixteen LTT on the feeder and they have let me take as many shots as I liked, probably due tot he noise they were making as there was so many of them..Also, because I'm next to countryside and woodland (quiet area) they aren't so used to a lot of noise and spooked more easily??? And that's using both quiet modes. With the D810 I don't have to use the quiet modes now.

Some of the reasons D750 is probably louder is probably due to cost, the D810 has dampening of the shutter, but IIRC it's only available in LV mode and probably a different shutter mechanism due to the higher expected shutter life of 200k over 150k of the D750 and general materials used to make the body?. They should address this with D750s or D760 whatever the next model would be. I cant remember if my D7000(x2) or D7100 were louder as it's been a while since I used them.

Similar as you for processing, I use the SSD for LR and then save to the HD and then transfer using a USB3 to my external drive, seems to keep my i7 (skylake) machine in good working order for PP. None of my images are critical so this way works for me.

I was just about to post a thread with a similar title, so hope the OP doesn't mind me jumping in!

I'm looking to upgrade one of my D700s, primarily to push the camera a bit further in lowlight with better results... I shoot a lot of concerts and the odd wedding.

My initial thought was to go for a D750.
However would a D4 be anyone's preferred choice?

If i can find a good condition low-count D4, I'm not really going to be spending too much more than a new (grey) D750 + grip + battery...

I went from a D200 to a D700 and then to a D750.

The first change was easier because the layout of the controls/buttons was similar. The D750 is different to the D200/D700 in this respect, but not difficult to adapt to. If I were using a D750 alongside a D700, it could be an issue though. I have to say that I love the 'deeper' grip for my right hand on the D750! With a compact prime (eg 35mm or 50mm), the D750 does feel quite a bit smaller than the D700.

I'm not bothered about shutter loudness, so it's not a factor for me.

I've never used a D8x0 or a D4, so I can't compare directly. However, I guess you need to ask yourself what you want/need. If you look at the D750 owners thread here, most people love it (as do I), but the buffer isn't the biggest, so it isn't the fastest, but the sensor is great for shadow recovery and as an all rounder, it's pretty good!
 
I've owned a D700 for years so when I wanted to replace / supplement it with something newer, I went into a camera shop and tried both the D750 and D810. The 750 felt like a retrograde step in terms of handling after 7 years with a 700 (although I'm sure I'd have got used to it). The 810 felt more like a natural progression and had a familiar feeling of substance in the hand. Needless to say, it was the 810 I went for!
