Nikon flashgun screen problem

The screen on my Nikon SB-700 is very dark, to the point of being unreadable, although strangely it is brighter in some menu pages than in others.

Before I send it to be repaired, am I missing an easy fix?

I have tried putting in different batteries.

For anyone else who has a similar problem, I sent this to Nikon for repair and it turned out that all it needed was the battery contacts cleaning.
