i want to buy an external flashgun for my nikon d50. unfortunately due to the economy being what it is and work being in short supply i dont have lots of money to spend. Anyway enough of the sob story my question is this are there any flash brands that will work just as well on my camera as the nikon ones do with all the features still working ie ittl ect
Thanks for any advice.

The Jessops 360 afd is good value for money at present £69.99

You should be more interested in guide number than the whistles and bells the flash has.

A powerful, all manual flash is dead easy to use, you just need to understand the rule regarding flash. There will be VERY few purely manual flash guns around, and a simple automatic aperture controlled one will work perfectly and not be difficult to manage (no more difficult than an iTTL one which still cocks it up 90% of the time.)

Those Yongyou ones FITP sells have a good rep, although you can get a Nikon flash for about £50-£60 used, albeit an old one like an SB50DX or an SB28. They should work fine with a D50 without any hassles. I use an SB28DX with my D2X that I picked up from MPBphotographic for £40 plus P&P - works brilliantly on and off the camera and is very powerful and reliable.

lol what?

get one of flash in the pan's new ones ;) :) It'll do automatic power levelling, and also has manual options for when you want to take it off camera.

You are right to want to retain iTTL, which works very well 90% of the time. And when it doesn't, it's very easy to sort out with a few on-camera adjustments.

Almost all current guns are fully iTTL compatible in slave mode, which is what you need. Only the top end guns from Nikon and other leading third party makers will also operate as master controllers (which you only need when using multiple off camera guns).

Jessops is good value at the moment but I think the Nissin is much better for under £100. If budget is tight, Yongnuo has it.
