Hello everyone,

Firstly this is my first post on here, so be gentle!!

Im looking at getting into flash photography using my Nikon D300, and one or two off camera flash units (SB900 or SB600), and Im after a bit of advice and guidance.

Could anyone help me with advice as what kit might be useful, such a cables to link the flashes, wireless triggers, and even a camera flash bracket recommendation, and even and recommeneded books that will help me learn.

As I say Im new to this area and any advice would be most welcome, thanks for any help in advance.

Flash in the pan (see advertisers section in the for sale section) sells a bracket that is pretty good.

The CLS system does not require cables, you can set the camera to fire one or both of your flashes off camera without a cable. I did a tutorial on it somewhere if you can do a quick search. You CAN use a cable if you like which cuts down on setup but it only takes a few moments to set it up once you know how.

Can't find it myself but basically you need to go into your camera's menu system and

locate "flash control for built in flash" then change this to "COMMANDER"

set "Built in flash" mode to '---"
Group A to TTL and comp to 0
make sure the channel is set to 1

make sure your flash is OPEN....

on the SB600 (sorry about to go out and not got the SB600 in front of me)

hold down the two buttons to change to setup mode on the flash and make sure that the channel is set to 1 and the group is set to A (ie to match the camera)

You can set both the flashes to a different group ie A and B and on the camera set Group B to TTL and comp to 0. This will set off both but allow you to change the COMP for each flash seperately.

Lastly it is possible to set off as many flashes as you like it they are all set as the same group and channel but you are not able to set their power seperately in that case.

It you get stuck someone will no doubt be along to tell you or I will take a look at the post tomorrow.

Oh and don't worry about the built in flash flashing and messing up the exposure it is flashing at a very low power and unless you are doing some kind of specialist lighting technique the extra light will not matter. If you ARE doing that then again check FLASHINTHEPAN's advert and there is a special device to place over the inbuilt flash.

Thanks for the replies, its given me some useful info.
